On Wednesday, the Kansas City Chiefs conducted their first mandatory minicamp session of the 2025 season at their practice facility on the grounds of the Truman Sports Complex in Kansas City.

Arrowhead Pride editor-in-chief Pete Sweeney was there. He posted some observations on social media — starting with threatening weather.

Wednesday’s mandatory minicamp session began outside with temperatures in the mid-70s but relocated inside the team facility about midway due to lightning in the area.

A few players missed out on Wednesday’s action.

4 players did not attend practice: WRs Rashee Rice and Justyn Ross, RB Elijah Mitchell and TE Tre Watson. The team noted Rice was excused.

TE Jake Briningstool and CB Kristian Fulton watched the workout from the sidelines without helmets.

DE Felix Anudike-Uzomah, OL Jaylon…

The Chiefs’ most famous tight end was on the field again — and spoke to reporters, too.

TE Travis Kelce attended both open media sessions of mandatory minicamp and spoke with local reporters for the first time since deciding to return for ’25. Here’s what we learned about his timeline: https://t.co/sc4weZ20vI

The defense seemed to be getting it together.

A general note to start on the practice as a whole: in what is a passing camp, the defense seemed to be settling in on Wednesday. Throughout the 11-on-11 periods, I counted at least 5 would-be sacks in a contact scenario, including two as a result of good coverage downfield.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

Rookie running back Brashard Smith turned some heads.

During the first period, QB Gardner Minshew hit rookie RB Brashard Smith in the right flat. Smith began darting upfield, stopping sharply and cutting left, allowing CB Nazeeh Johnson to pass by. Smith isn’t suddenly going to be an RB1 but eager to see live padded sessions at TC.

There were several QB-to-WR matchups for touchdowns.

During 11-on-11 in the red zone, TE Noah Gray caught a touchdown pass from QB Patrick Mahomes on a slant. WR Mac Dalena hauled in a score from Minshew on what looked like a post. WR Jason Brownlee had a touchdown from QB Chris Oladokun.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

Linebacker Drue Tranquill made a play…

One-on-one against Kelce in 7-on-7, LB Drue Tranquil broke up a pass from Mahomes. After practice, Mahomes revealed it was a freestyle call for Kelce, and they’re still grinding.

Mahomes: “I thought he was going to do [one thing]. He thought he should do something else, and we…

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

…as did safety Mike Edwards.

Later in 7-on-7, S Mike Edwards stepped in front of a Minshew pass to pick it cleanly. Oladokun threw a deep back-shoulder touchdown down the right sideline to Brownlee for two total scores in the look.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

Mahomes found both Noah Gray and Xavier Worthy in the red zone…

In red-zone 7-on-7, Mahomes finished his part with touchdowns to Gray and a crosser to WR Xavier Worthy where the receiver would have outrun the defense laterally in a game scenario for 6.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

…while Gardner Minshew connected with Robert Tonyan.

In Minshew’s turn at RZ 7-on-7, he had a touchdown to TE Robert Tonyan before rookie CB Nohl Williams broke up one of his passes.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

Mahomes finished up with a touchdown pass to Hollywood Brown.

Mahomes’ final throw of OTAs was a touchdown on the goal line to WR Hollywood Brown.

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

Pete tallied up Mahomes’ targets on the day.

Mahomes’ 11-on-11 targets in the look: Kelce (4), Gray (3), Brown (2), Moore, Pacheco, Remigio, Smith, Thornton, Tonyan, Worthy

— Pete Sweeney (@pgsween) June 18, 2025

And also collected some video.

The final mandatory minicamp session on Thursday will consist only of the annual run test for all players, so we will have no observations from that practice. Head coach Andy Reid will then speak to reporters to mark the end of the offseason’s Phase 3. That will be followed by the summer break, which will last until the beginning of the team’s training camp at Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph.
