The Athletic’s Dane Brugler has published his post-combine mock draft. In his mid-January offering, Brugler had the Kansas City Chiefs taking Michigan defensive tackle Kenneth Grant — but in Tuesday’s mock, he sent a tackle to Kansas City.
31. Kansas City Chiefs: Josh Conerly Jr., OT, Oregon
The Chiefs have no choice but to make some changes this offseason at offensive tackle. Conerly, who had the best 10-yard split of any lineman at the combine, has high-level quickness and recovery balance.
If you didn’t like Kyle Stackpole’s Friday mock that sent Ohio State guard Donovan Jackson to the Chiefs, you might like Brugler’s choice a lot better. With this mock, Conerly ties Jackson for the most picks in the mocks we’ve covered — all of them since February 18.
Kansas City had a formal meeting with Conerly at the Combine — and our Rocky Magaña likes what he sees in a player who converted from running back in high school.
Left tackle is probably Kansas City’s biggest need — and Conerly’s skill set makes him a nice fit for the Chiefs. He would give quarterback Patrick Mahomes a blocker who can scramble with him, getting out in front to block for him downfield.
Conerly has one drawback, though: his 33 1/2-inch arms are just under the 34-inch threshold for the team’s offensive tackles. But many of the best tackles in this draft class — including Josh Simmons, Will Campbell and Kelvin Banks Jr. — have the same problem.
In four of the last five mock drafts we’ve covered, Conerly has been available at 31. In Mel Kiper’s 2.0 mock on February 25, he was taken with the 26th selection.
