Unfit Chelsea may have to weather early storm
What we really hoped for was a soft start. It’s always good to get points on the board early, and that is especially important for us given our participation at the Club World Cup. We will only have 2 friendlies the week before we open the season against Crystal Palace, so we expect our team to be slow out of the blocks compared to some others.
We’ve already accepted there will be some dropped points to start things off -luckily we have a lot of London based games in the first month, so things are at least easy on the travel front.
Champions League returns will test Enzo Maresca’s squad
Another important thing to look at is the games following Champions League matches.
Hopefully playing in the Conference League last season at least prepared this group for the 2 games a week rhythm they will have this coming season too. The opposition will be harder, but the pattern is the same.
Our games after midweek Champions League clashes are: Man U, Liverpool, Sunderland, Wolves, Arsenal, Everton, Crystal Palace and West Ham.
That’s pretty ugly, all told. At least those final two weeks are a little softer, meaning if we’re still battling to get into the qualification positions, we can focus on that and not the league.
Equally, when we face the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal, they will also be coming off the back of Champions League games themselves. So it will balance out a little.
