We don’t hear much about Conor McGregor returning to the octagon anymore.
When McGregor was selected to coach The Ultimate Fighter 31 opposite lightweight contender Michael Chandler in 2023, most assumed that the two would fight at the conclusion of the season. At the time, McGregor’s promotional obligations to the remake of the film Road House pushed a potential return back until 2024.
The two where scheduled to headline UFC 303 last June, but McGregor pulled out of the fight citing a toe injury. After waiting for nearly two years for a fight against McGregor to materialize, Chandler moved on.
A McGregor return would be unique. The Irishman earns too much money to not headline the fight card. He’d also have to face an opponent worthy of a main event slot. According to former UFC title challenger turned commentator Chael Sonnen, McGregor can’t beat anyone on the UFC roster.
“You’re behaving like somebody that’s retired. You have absolutely no license. You haven’t had a license. You’re allegedly in a (testing) pool that if you were tested you clearly could not pass,” Sonnen said on his YouTube channel.

“There’s a lot of things, and that’s before we get to the fact that there’s not an athlete under contract with the UFC that Conor can beat,” continued Sonnen. “That’s not meant to be mean. The worst, the least experienced 155-pounder would clean him up. The worst, the least experienced 170-pounder would clean him up. If Conor were to come back and enter at 155, or enter at 170, he would be the worst in the entire division. Not because he wasn’t great. Just because he hasn’t been doing it.”
