Shortly after the conclusion of the Boston Celtics victory over the Denver Nuggets, the team announced that they have waived Anton Watson. Watson was the 54th overall selection in the 2024 NBA Draft, signing with the Celtics on a two-way contract last summer.

Despite his two-way status, Watson never made his Boston Celtics debut. Instead, he spent all of his time with their G-league counterpart out of Maine. He played 21 regular season games there, averaging 12 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 2.1 assists in just under 30 minutes per game.

By waiving Anton, the Celtics clears up one of their three two-way slots, coming just before the March 4th deadline to sign players to such contracts. This provides Watson with an opportunity to sign with another team before the deadline.

Two-way contracts have no salary or tax implications for a team. Players on such contracts are ineligible for the NBA Playoffs, meaning Watson would not have been available past the regular season regardless. With that being said, two-way players are eligible to play in up to 50 NBA games. Given that there are only 21 games left in the Celtics season, a new signee would be eligible to play in all of Boston’s remaining regular season games.
