When The Pittsburgh Kid Came This Close

In a night of mixed emotions at the ANB Arena in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, Mexico’s Saúl “Canelo” Álvarez once again proved why he’s the king of the super middleweight division. The pound-for-pound superstar scored a unanimous decision victory over Cuba’s William Scull, retaining his WBA, WBC, and WBO titles — and adding the IBF belt to become the undisputed champion once more.

From the opening bell, Canelo showcased his ring IQ and veteran savvy, going to the body early in an effort to slow down the elusive Cuban. Scull, however, leaned heavily on defense, moving constantly and staying out of range to avoid heavy exchanges. His slick movement frustrated Canelo at times, forcing the Mexican icon to make tactical adjustments throughout the fight.

Despite Scull’s resistance and defensive tactics, the judges saw it clearly in favor of Álvarez: 115–113, 116–112, and 119–109 — a wide decision that spoke to the control and composure Canelo maintained from start to finish.

This bout also marked a significant milestone for the Guadalajara native, as it was the first time he fought outside the Americas — a new chapter in an already storied career.

With the win, Canelo solidifies his legacy as one of boxing’s all-time greats and now sets his sights on an even bigger challenge: a blockbuster showdown with American star Terence Crawford, scheduled for September 12 in Las Vegas.

The message is clear — the king is not done yet.
