Canada Seeks Second Straight Davis Cup Win in Montreal: Meet the Team

For the second year in a row, Montreal will play host to Team Canada presented by IGA’s first qualifying round Davis Cup tie at IGA Stadium. 

Four of the five members of the team that defeated the Republic of Korea last February are back in 2025, this time looking to defeat Hungary and book their place in the new qualifiers second round in September. 

With the tie fast approaching, let’s catch up with the men who will be donning the red and white for Canada. 

Denis Shapovalov 

Rank: 56 

Davis Cup Appearance: 12th  

Davis Cup Record: 18-11 

After missing Canada’s entire 2023 Davis Cup campaign with a knee injury, Shapovalov made a welcome return to the team in 2024, competing in four ties and posting a 4-2 record, 3-1 in singles and 1-1 in doubles. During September’s Finals Group Stage in Manchester, he won all three of his singles matches in straight sets. He then led the nation in the Final 8 in Malaga but lost a heart-breaker in a third set tiebreaker to Jan-Lennard Struff as Canada fell to Germany. 

Shapovalov finished 2024 with a bang on the ATP Tour, winning his second career title at the Belgrade Open. He has had a bit of a tricky start to 2025, posting a 2-3 record in his first three tournaments, including a second-round showing at the Australian Open.

Something to keep an eye on during the 2025 Davis Cup campaign is that Shapovalov currently has 14 singles wins for Canada in the team competition, which leaves him just three victories behind Milos Raonic and Sébastien Lareau for the most all-time. Four victories in 2025 and the 25-year-old becomes the country’s all-time singles win leader. The earliest he could break the record would be in September if Shapovalov wins two singles matches in Montreal. 

Gabriel Diallo

Davis Cup Appearance: 8th   

Davis Cup Record: 4-5 

A year ago in Montreal, Diallo was the hero for Team Canada, winning a pair of singles matches in his own backyard to lead the country into the Davis Cup Finals. He finished the year 2-2 in Davis Cup, playing one doubles rubber during the group stage and a singles match in Canada’s quarter-final loss in Malaga. 

2024 was a breakthrough year for Diallo as he made his first appearances in the majors, including a career-best third-round appearance at the US Open, reached his first tour-level final, and entered the Top 100 of ATP rankings. He picked up another match win at a major early in 2025, winning his first five-set match over Luca Nardi at the Australian Open before falling in four tight sets in the second round. 

Alexis Galarneau

Davis Cup Appearance: 9th  

Davis Cup Record: 5-5 

Galarneau keeps his Davis Cup participation streak alive with another nomination in Montreal. The Lavallois has been a member of Team Canada at every tie since making his debut in March 2022. It’s the longest active streak among Canadian players in Davis Cup competition.  

In 2024, he made two appearances in doubles for Canada, during the qualifiers in Montreal and in the Finals Group Stage against Great Britain. So far in 2025, Galarneau has spent much of his time playing in ATP Challenger events in Portugal. In the first of two tournaments, he reached the semifinals.  

Liam Draxl 

Rank: 208 (singes), 133 (doubles) 

Davis Cup Appearance: 2nd  

The 23-year-old from Newmarket is the only Canadian ranked inside the Top 250 in both singles and doubles on the ATP Tour. Draxl was red hot to finish 2024, reaching the singles final in six of his last seven events on the ATP Challenger and ITF tours, winning titles in Edmonton, Saint-Augustin, and Huamantla, Mexico. 

He was even more dominant in doubles, reaching the semis or better at all 10 tournaments he played after the National Bank Open in August, winning five titles out of seven finals. He finished the year on an eight-match winning streak with back-to-back Challenger titles. 

Draxl earned his first nomination with Team Canada last year in Montreal but has yet to play a match in Davis Cup competition. 

Vasek Pospisil

Davis Cup Appearance: 29th   

Davis Cup Record: 32-27 

2025 will mark the 14th consecutive Davis Cup season where Vasek Pospisil has suited up for Team Canada. Since 2011, he has missed just four chances to represent his country. His 35 ties and 15 years as a member of the team (including the upcoming tie) are second only to Daniel Nestor in Canadian Davis Cup history. 

Pospisil has yet to play a competitive match in 2025. He made the trip to Melbourne for the Australian Open only for his doubles partner to withdraw. Injuries have been an issue for the veteran for a while now. He only played four total matches, three singles and one doubles (in Davis Cup during the group stage last September) since last summer’s National Bank Open in Montreal.  

He spent most of 2024 on the ATP Challenger Tour, but his one main tour-level match win came during Canada’s Davis Cup win in Montreal over South Korea. 

The 2025 qualifiers first round tie with Hungary will take place Saturday, Feb. 1 and Sunda,y Feb. 2 at IGA Stadium in Montreal.
