In what has become golf equipment’s most predictable second act, Callaway has announced limited-edition “Black Shadow” versions of its Apex Ai200 and Ai300 irons. Because nothing says “take my money” quite like a murdered-out aesthetic.

The shadow treatment

Like Batman’s wardrobe, the golf equipment landscape seems to operate on a simple principle: eventually, everything comes in black. The limited-edition Black Shadow finish features what Callaway describes as a “sleek, chrome-plated black finish that exudes sophistication and power.” Translation: They look really cool and hopefully your friends will notice.

Previous black (or blue, if you’re Mizuno) offerings from basically everyone has proven that many golfers will gladly pay a premium for what they see as an aesthetic upgrade. While Callaway doesn’t share specific details about the durability of their Black Shadow finish, hopefully the “chrome-plated” description signals these won’t wear as quickly as PVD offerings of the past.

All that Apex Ai tech

Beyond the cosmetic upgrade, these Black Shadow editions deliver the same technologies that have made the Apex Ai series among Callaway’s most complete offerings.

Both models feature a forged hollow body combined with a forged 455 Face Cup.

The Ai200 is positioned as Callaway’s “most complete player’s distance iron,” balancing workability with forgiveness.

The Ai300 offers a slightly larger profile as a game-improvement option while maintaining the premium forged feel.

Both models leverage Callaway’s Ai Smart Face technology using real player data and artificial intelligence to generate consistent ball speed, spin and tight dispersion.

The complete package

To complete the stealthy aesthetic, the irons come stock with True Temper DG Mid 100 Gunmetal shafts (100g in R and S flexes) and Golf Pride Z-Grip grips. Matching black components have become standard practice with these limited-edition releases, creating a cohesive look from grip to clubhead.

The Apex Ai200 Black Shadow will be available in 4-P (custom only) and 5-AW (gap wedge) while the Ai300 comes in a 5-AW setup. Both are available in right-handed only which might disappoint a healthy percentage of our friends north of the border although I suppose they’re growing used to it.

Premium pricing for premium looks

At $229 per stick or $1,599 for a seven-piece set, these Black Shadow editions command a premium over their standard Apex Ai counterparts. While that’s a hefty upcharge, it aligns with what we’ve seen from other black offerings.

Is a black finish worth the upcharge? That’s between you and your bank account. But if history has taught us anything, it’s that limited-edition black irons tend to sell briskly, suggesting plenty of golfers are willing to pay extra for the aesthetic upgrade.

Whether you’re a serious player who appreciates the look of blacked-out irons or a next-level golf nerd who wants their clubs to coordinate with their favorite ninja outfit, the Apex Ai200 and Ai300 Black Shadow editions fit the bill.

Availability

The Callaway Ai200 and Ai300 Black Shadow Irons are available for pre-sale now.

Full retail availability begins April 25.
