Well, well, well. Look who’s jumping on the copper bandwagon.

Callaway just announced limited-edition brushed copper versions of the Apex Ai200 and Apex Ai300 irons because, apparently, nothing says “premium golf equipment” quite like making everything look like it belongs in a steampunk fantasy.

Don’t get me wrong. I am absolutely not complaining. The copper finish looks fantastic and Callaway isn’t alone in recognizing that golfers have developed a serious appetite for metallics that don’t involve chrome or black. TaylorMade, Mizuno, Vokey—they’ve all been mining copper and for good reason.

It works.

The third bite at the apple

Here’s the thing about limited-edition finishes: they’re brilliant business. We’ve already seen this playbook with the Apex Ai lineup. First came the standard version. Then Callaway rolled out the Black Shadow edition for those who wanted something a little more sinister in their bag.

Now we get copper.

It would be nice if all finishes were available at launch but this approach is the perfect strategy for capturing golfers who might have passed on the original release and passed again on Black Shadow but can’t resist the warm, vintage appeal of brushed copper. At $230 per stick ($1,610 for a seven-piece set), it’s a nice little upcharge opportunity over the standard models.

It’s hard to fault Callaway (or anyone else). If people are willing to pay extra for a different color, why not give them what they want?

The performance story

Look, we’ve already covered the performance details of the Apex Ai lineup, so I won’t rehash the full technology breakdown here. The short version: both the Ai200 (hollow-body player’s distance) and Ai300 (cavity-back game-improvement) pack Callaway’s Ai Smart Face technology and Forged 455 Face Cup for speed, consistency and feel.

The copper finish doesn’t change any of that. These are the same irons you already know, just dressed up in a finish that’ll make your playing partners stop and stare.

Limited means limited

Callaway is calling these “limited edition” which in golf equipment speak usually means “we’ll make them until people stop buying them.” But given the popularity of special finishes and the fact that copper has become the hot metallic of choice, don’t expect these to stick around forever.

If you’ve been on the fence about the Apex Ai lineup and have a thing for copper, this might be your moment. Just don’t blame me when your buddies start asking where you got the fancy irons.

The Callaway Apex Ai200 and Ai300 Brushed Copper irons are available now at $230 per stick.
