The San Francisco 49ers and quarterback Brock Purdy have agreed to a five-year, $265m contract extension, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported Friday. The deal includes $181m in guaranteed money, solidifying Purdy’s role as the franchise quarterback moving forward.

Purdy, 25, was the final pick of the 2022 NFL draft – familiarly known as ‘Mr Irrelevant’ – but quickly defied expectations. After stepping in as the starter midway through his rookie season, Purdy led the 49ers to back-to-back playoff appearances, including a trip to the Super Bowl in February 2024. He was also named to the Pro Bowl and finished fourth in MVP voting that season.

Despite San Francisco’s injury-riddled 6-11 campaign in 2024, Purdy still posted strong numbers, throwing for 3,864 yards, 20 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. His completion percentage over three seasons sits at 67.5%, with a total of 9,518 passing yards, 64 touchdowns and 27 interceptions.

The extension comes as Purdy enters the final year of his rookie contract in 2025. General manager John Lynch hinted at the deal during the NFL league meetings in Florida, saying he was confident an agreement would be reached. “I think we’re going to get the deal done,” Lynch said at the time.

Purdy’s new contract places him among the highest-paid quarterbacks in the league, reflecting San Francisco’s commitment to building around him for the long term. “I want to be in San Francisco and play my football career here,” Purdy said. “I know that I’m the guy for this organization and that I can do what it takes to help lead us where we want to go.”

With the extension finalized, Purdy is expected to lead the 49ers back into playoff contention after last year’s disappointing finish.
