The 27-year-old is hopeful of Olympic choice and now has his sights set on the nationwide 20km file

Callum Wilkinson smashed his personal UK 10,000m race walks file on Sunday and says if he’s picked for the Paris Olympics he needs to attempt to break Tom Bosworth’s nationwide 20km file of 79:38.

Wilkinson, 27, clocked 38:43.91 to beat his earlier mark of 39:05.85 which was set in Newport in 2021 a number of months earlier than he completed tenth within the Tokyo Olympics 20km.

“I feel it’s sufficient [for Paris] and doubtless went even higher than I used to be aiming for as long as nobody has completed something loopy quick the world over this weekend,” mentioned Wilkinson, who was ninth within the European Championships in Rome earlier this month.

“The championship race in Paris can be completely different. I really need the British 20km file. I really feel I’ve received that in me. It’s the one I’ve at all times wished since I used to be younger.

“I’ll go straight to altitude after this to St Moritz as it’s my favorite place on the planet to coach. The elite endurance set-up is so sturdy on this nation.”

He added: “My one bit of recommendation to anybody who qualifies right here is to take pleasure in it and deal with it as your final Olympics not your first. I’ve had so many accidents and surgical procedures because the final Olympics to be again on this place is so thrilling and I actually take pleasure in it. I’ve matured within the final three years and to go once more is for me.”

Ninth on the European Championships in Rome in 81:34.

Simply 17, Gracie Griffiths gained the ladies’s 5000m title.
