With one last chance to keep hold of their Championship status, Hull will travel to Fratton Park on Saturday lunchtime when they meet Portsmouth.
Starting with the hosts, while Portsmouth might have only made their Championship return this season, John Mousinho’s men have breezed their way to second-tier safety in 2025. Although a top-half finish might be off the cards, Pompey have received plenty of plaudits and have collected some heavyweight scalps. Coming from behind away at Sheffield Wednesday last week as they snatched a 1-1 stalemate, the Blues have collected seven points from their previous three Championship appearances. Springing a real upset away at Carrow Road on April 18th as they claimed a thumping 5-3 victory against Norwich, Saturday’s hosts will be looking to sign off their successful campaign with one final statement. A huge part of Portsmouth’ success has come thanks to their dominance on home soil. In fact, Mousinho’s men have lost just one of their previous eight matchups at Fratton Park – a run that stems back to January 28th.
As for the visitors, while Hull might have opened the 2024/25 campaign with their sights set on mounting another play-off charge, the Tigers have endured a public Championship nightmare. Getting their season-finale underway sat one-point adrift in the drop zone, Ruben Selles’ men are seeking a final weekend miracle at Fratton Park. Making an immediate return to losing ways last weekend as they slumped to a 1-0 defeat at home against fellow strugglers Derby, Saturday’s guests have drastically failed to find any kind of stability under the former Reading boss. Suffering consecutive 1-0 defeats against Swansea and Watford in their last two showdowns away from the MKM Stadium, Selles’ side have shown a string of issues on the road. Mustering just a single victory from any of their previous six Championship showdowns outside of Yorkshire, Hull will have a tremors amount of pressure on their shoulders this weekend.
