The PGA Show giveth … and the PGA Show taketh away.
It gives golf professionals and media members alike a chance to see what’s new, hot and hip in the golf equipment space. (It also often gives those in attendance a nasty cold. But I digress.)
Once again, as we have done for years, a few of your dedicated spies scoured the PGA Show to bring you the coolest gear. Without any further delay, let’s start handing our our prestigious “Best of Show” awards!
Powerbilt Oil Brushed Copper ATLAS MB Irons
Muscle-back irons aren’t for everyone but there’s no denying the eye-catching curb appeal of the Powerbilt Atlas MB iron with a durable DLC Oil Brushed Bronze finish. Custom ferrules from Boyd Blade and Ferrule Company complete the package. Among the most compact blades we’ve seen in a while, we’re not sure the ATLAS will improve your ball striking but it sure would be fun to find out.
Under Armour Phantom Fore Golf
The continuation of my favorite casual golf shoe line, Under Armour’s new Phantom Fore (4) golf shoe has upgraded traction and even more comfy foam for an uber-smooth walk on the golf course.
Hyperice x NIKE Recovery Boots
The Hyperice x NIKE Recovery Boots made their debut at last year’s Olympics and I’ve been dying to try them ever since. After spending a few minutes having my feet massaged and warmed at the Hyperice booth, I’m convinced this product can and will change how golfers recover. Oh, and I’m trying to find a way to convince my wife to let me get a pair when the make their way to retail (hopefully later this year)
IXI Electric Golf Trolley
This may very well have been the coolest thing at the show. It is, in essence, a self-driving motorized electric trolley with a built-in computer and camera system. That allows it to drive around the course without a remote control or really any help from you. It knows the layout of each hole, where the hazards are and where the green is and will transport your clubs accordingly. I still don’t know how it all works but I lost my mind when the inventor showed his putter to the front camera and the trolley automatically headed to the green and positioned itself near the next tee box. Oh, it also responds to voice commands through a microphone and can be manipulated with an app-based joystick if you want to use it that way.
That camera can also record your swing and is equipped with a shot tracer. It was invented by a group of Belgian software engineers who were somehow able to pack all this technology into an onboard computer that’s embedded in the trolley body itself. I don’t think this thing is ready for prime time just yet and the preliminary $5,000 price tag will be a bridge too far for some. But, dang it, it is cool.
SwingTrax360/GameTrax360 – by SkyGolf
SwingTrax360 takes shot tracking and GPS to an entirely different level. Using special “Super Tags”, SwingTrax360 not only tracks your shots on the course, it captures swing motion and swing data on the course and on the range.
The assoicated app (or compatible SkyGolf GPS unit) will provide 360-degree, 3D-animated views of your swing along with swing metrics to show swing speed, hand speed, backswing length, face angle, swing path, shaft lean and more for all your clubs, including putter. You can use it on the range for practice or even in your rec room with AirSwing Technology (you don’t need a ball). We’ll see how accurate it is but our experience with SkyGolf leads us to believe there’s promise here.
COBRA 3DP Tour irons
COBRA is breaking new ground with the first commercially available metal-jet 3D-printed irons. We got to demo the 3DP Tour irons in the rain and all we can say is “mercy!” COBRA says the irons pack all of the forgiveness and ball speed you’d expect from an oversized game-improvement iron into a package the size of a compact muscle-back iron. We’ll have to see about that but we can say they were among the sweetest-feeling irons at the show.
Toptracer
This was a revelation. I honestly had no idea how deep Toptracer technology was. It’s not just a launch monitor for the driving range which is its primary function. The technology can be used on your phone or tablet as well (if the range is Toptracer capable) and it has a variety of metrics it can record for your practice sessions.
There are the expected games as well so if you bring your kids to the range, they can play Angry Birds while you actually practice. The icing on the cake for me was simulation mode where you can play courses like Pebble or the Old Course at St Andrews with your friends, even if they’re not at the range with you. It’s all online so they can join you at the same time at a Toptracer range near them or they can play the next day and still be part of the same group and compete. This is what real golfers hoped Topgolf would be.
Penfold 2027 Ryder Cup gear
First-class, high-quality Sunday bags, shoe bags and backpacks with the 2027 Ryder Cup logo from Penfold. If you want to learn more about British waxed canvas material, Penfold can fill you in all the details. For me, the stuff just looked cool and is built to last. It celebrates not only the 100th anniversary of the Ryder Cup but also the 100th anniversary of Penfold itself.
Stack System Wedge App

New products often bring excitement (and cost). That second part is why I love it when new features get rolled out for the stuff you already have. Coming later this month, the Stack System’s new wedge app will help users dial in their short game while adding a new element of gamification to the growing Stack ecosystem.
Hyperice Normatec Elite
After spending all day walking around the show, nothing helped me recover and get back on my feet faster than the Hyperice Normatec Elite. These portable leg sleeves use targeted compression to massage your aching legs and sore feet. Man, did it feel good. No wonder I spent more time in this booth than any other. They had to ask me to leave!
