The Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen have set their sights on Arsenal’s versatile defender Jakub Kiwior. According to Tuttomercatoweb, the German giants have made an enquiry about the Polish international’s availability as they prepare for a defensive overhaul this summer.
Kiwior’s Arsenal Struggles
Arsenal had high hopes for Kiwior when they secured him from Spezia Calcio in early 2023. While Mikel Arteta values the 25-year-old’s versatility—capable of playing as both a centre-back and left-back—he has struggled for consistent game time.
Despite making 30 appearances in the 2023/24 season, Kiwior logged just over 1,500 minutes on the pitch. This term, his playing time has been even more limited, featuring in only 17 matches with just over 1,000 minutes to his name. His lack of opportunities has left him frustrated, with several clubs expressing interest last summer. However, Arteta was adamant about keeping him as a valuable squad player.
Leverkusen Eye Defensive Reinforcements
With Jonathan Tah set to depart as a free agent—potentially heading to Barcelona—and uncertainty surrounding Piero Hincapié’s future, Leverkusen are prioritising defensive reinforcements. Kiwior is seen as an ideal fit for Alonso’s system and the club’s long-term project.
Leverkusen have already approached Arsenal to discuss a possible transfer, with Kiwior’s valuation reportedly between €15 to €20 million. Given their upcoming Champions League campaign and financial stability, meeting that price tag shouldn’t be an issue for the German outfit.
With Kiwior eager for more regular football, this could be the window where Arsenal finally part ways with the Polish defender.
