According to Sky Sports, Atletico Madrid are interested in signing Cristian Romero from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
The 26-year-old defender seems unhappy with Spurs’ perceived lack of ambition and the way the club is being run. He openly criticized his current employers for frequently changing the coaching staff and failing to bolster the squad when necessary. His words are currently sounding with a strong ring of truth at the moment, with Ange Postecoglou’s team sitting in 14th place in the Premier League table amid a heavy injury crisis. Romero himself has been a part of that crisis, having missed 25 matches through injury since the start of the season in all competitions.
Nevertheless, Atletico have been monitoring Romero’s progress for years and they are convinced the Argentina international has what it takes to become one of the best centre-backs on the planet under the guidance of Diego Simeone – his compatriot and a symbol of stability in the coaching role having been in charge at Atletico since December, 2011.
Romero has two years left on his contract, and Spurs are likely to consider offers for his services this summer, unless he signs a new deal.
