Match preview for Atalanta v Inter

Two Serie A championship contenders will battle for supremacy on Sunday evening as Atalanta host Inter Milan.

With fewer than 40 miles separating the two clubs and only three points between them in the standings, this showdown comes shortly after Napoli have the chance to claim the top spot against Venezia.

Atalanta’s stunning 3-0 victory over Juventus last weekend was one of their most remarkable performances this season.

The win not only dealt a significant blow to Juventus’ title hopes but also kept Atalanta in the mix for their first-ever Serie A championship.

They have matched Inter’s tally of 63 goals in 28 games, averaging an impressive 2.25 goals per match.

Atalanta’s defensive strength has also been evident – keeping five consecutive Serie A clean sheets, but they have failed to win consecutive league matches in 2025 and are yet to secure a victory in Bergamo in five straight Serie A outings.

Inter Milan currently occupy the top spot, but Atalanta could match Inter’s points total if they emerge victorious in this encounter.

History favours Inter, who have remained unbeaten in their last 12 Serie A meetings with Atalanta. Their dominant form against La Dea includes a 4-0 victory in the reverse fixture and a 2-0 triumph in the Supercoppa Italiana semi-final earlier this year.

However, their recent away form has shown some vulnerabilities, as they have failed to win any of their last four league games on the road.

Despite this, Inter booked a place in the Champions League quarter-finals with a midweek win over Feyenoord, securing a 4-1 aggregate victory.

Team news for Atalanta v Inter

Both teams will field their strongest available lineups for this high-stakes clash.

Atalanta’s head coach Gian Piero Gasperini, who had a brief stint in charge of Inter in the past, has had a full week to prepare his squad, though injuries remain a concern.

Key players Gianluca Scamacca, Odilon Kossounou, and Giorgio Scalvini remain sidelined, while Stefan Posch and ex-Inter winger Juan Cuadrado will also miss the match. Ademola Lookman is expected to support Serie A top scorer Mateo Retegui in attack.

On the other side, Inter captain Lautaro Martinez – who has scored more Serie A goals against Atalanta than any other player in the last five years (six) – is set to reunite with Marcus Thuram in attack after being rested against Feyenoord.

Midfielders Nicolo Barella and Alessandro Bastoni, also benched midweek, will return to the starting XI.

However, the Nerazzurri will be without Matteo Darmian, Federico Dimarco, and Nicola Zalewski due to injuries, while Stefan de Vrij remains doubtful. Polish international Piotr Zielinski is ruled out for the next month.

Expected line-ups for Atalanta v Inter

Atalanta: Carnesecchi; Djimsiti, Hien, Kolasinac; Bellanova, De Roon, Ederson, Zappacosta; De Ketelaere, Lookman; Retegui

Inter: Sommer; Pavard, Acerbi, Bastoni; Dumfries, Barella, Calhanoglu, Mkhitaryan, Augusto; Martinez, Thuram.
