Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has provided an injury update on Anthony Gordon ahead of Wednesday’s Premier League clash with Brentford at St. James’ Park.

The winger picked up a thigh injury while on international duty during the closing stages of England’s 2-0 win over Albania, forcing him to withdraw from the Three Lions squad.

Gordon will miss the visit of the Bees regardless as he serves the final game of his three-match suspension, but the Magpies will need him back for the run-in.

Newcastle are currently sixth in the table, one point behind Manchester City with a game in hand. A top five finish is highly likely going to be enough to qualify for the Uefa Champions League this season.

“Anthony has a really nasty bruising around his thigh, groin area,” Howe revealed in his pre-match press conference.

“He’s up and running, feeling quite good but he hasn’t trained with the group yet so we anticipate he’ll do that within the next few days, hopefully.”

Meanwhile, Sven Botman could return to action in May after recently undergoing minor knee surgery.

“Sven’s not too bad. He’s had a very minor operation just to clean out a bit of floating bone that was in his knee that was causing him the problem.

“I think the initial diagnosis was between six to eight weeks but I think he’s already got through two or three of those so he’s on the road, he’s feeling good and fingers crossed will see him in May sometime.”

Jamaal Lascelles, on the other hand, may have played his last match for Newcastle. The defender, whose contract expires in the summer, has been sidelined since suffering a cruciate-ligament injury last spring.

“I don’t know if we will see Jamaal again [this season],” he admitted. “I don’t want to set a target or time. He has started very light training with the squad – on the drills – that are not competitive. He has looked very good; it is small steps for him.”
