Andy Roddick pours cold water on criticism surrounding Coco Gauff Oscars appearance

Andy Roddick doesn’t think there are any reasons for Coco Gauff to be receiving criticism for her appearance at the Oscars when it is a well-known thing that the 20-year-old goes very professionally and seriously about her career.

After seeing her Australian Open title chances come to an end with a surprise quarterfinal loss to Paula Badosa, the world No. 3 also picked up back-to-back opening-round losses at the WTA 1000 tournaments in Doha and Dubai.

So when the top-ranked American female tennis player made an appearance at the Academy Awards, some started claiming she was more focused on some non-tennis things.

Also, some had an issue with Gauff appearing at the celebrity event just before the start of the WTA 1000 tournament in Indian Wells.

Addressing it on his Served with Andy Roddick podcast, the American tennis legend didn’t think the criticism made sense.

Roddick I’m not sure Gauff is the target for that

“When Coco, who is a business unto herself, gets a chance to knock something out for a sponsor, she rarely gets a better opportunity,” the 2003 US Open winner said.

“She’s not going to find a better path than in LA. It’s the most logical loop. You land in LA, then spend a night or two and get back on the court.

“I think we should focus on people who are actually struggling with being professional when training.

“I’m not sure Coco is the target for that, but in reality, when you’re a global superstar, stopping in LA to promote any brand or business and then heading to Indian Wells is about as tight of an operation as you’re going to get.”

In her pre-tournament presser in Indian Wells slammed “overreactions” to her recent back-to-back losses, saying that stuff is normal and will happen again.

In the desert, the No. 3 seed had a first-round bye and will learn her opening rival after Emma Raducanu and Moyuka Uchijima finish their match.
