Andreescu Undergoes Emergency Surgery

Bianca Andreescu is recovering from an emergency appendectomy—and aiming for a clay-court comeback in the spring.

The 2019 US Open champion announced her sudden surgery on social media. Surgery has forced Andreescu out of the Merida Open in Mexico later this month.

A creative and versatile player, Andreescu has been plagued by an assortment of injuries in recent years. The 2019 Indian Wells champion has not competed since her run to the Tokyo quarterfinals last October, falling to Katie Boulter, 6-2, 6-1.

Now, the 130th-ranked Canadian’s comeback will have to wait until spring as she recovers from surgery.

“Training was going so well and I was very excited for the Merida Open to be my first tournament of the 2025 season,” Andreescu posted on social media. “However, I unexpectedly started experiencing some sharp pains in my stomach, which led to an emergency appendectomy.

“The surgery went smoothly, and I’m on the road to recovery. My plan is to be back on the court for the clay season stronger than ever. Thanks so much for all your support—can’t wait to competing.”

The Merida Open is set for February 24-March 2nd.

Last season, Andreescu contested the ‘s-Hertogenbosch final on grass losing to Liudmila Samsonova, 6-4, 3-6, 5-7. Andreescu later snapped a five-match losing streak with her Tokyo quarterfinal result in her last tournament appearance in October.
