It Felt Like a Joke

Paris – It was a busy day of qualifying at Roland-Garros, where the springtime sun was shining brightly and some of the world’s top tennis stars took to the court to begin a five-day trek that could land them a spot in the main draw.

Tennis Express

Bianca Andreescu took the court in total confidence, handling the 10 AM start like an early riser on a mission. The former US Open champion defeated 21-year-old Chinese Yao Xinxin a 6-0, 6-0 shellacking, and afterwards talked about her drive to get back to the top.

“I do believe that I can get back to the top, and I think I showed that last week,” Andreescu told reporters. “I have no time to waste, for me it’s not like it’s now or never because I know I’m still only 24, but I see all these youngsters doing well and I’m like ahh [expresses alarm], because I’ve been on the tour for quite a while, like six years, right?

“Whatever I can do to control the controllables, I will do. That’s me, my attitude, what I put in my body, all this stuff.”

Andreescu will face Japan’s Nao Hibino next.

Fabio Fognini was not so lucky on Monday. The former quarterfinalist was defeated easily by American Nicolas Moreno De Alboran, 6-3, 6-2, thus ending his Roland-Garros career.

Fognini showed some of his trademark genius during the match, but couldn’t match the American’s consistency as he committed too many errors.

“I didn’t know that it was his last Roland-Garros, I don’t check the draws either,” said the world No.152. “But Fabio is a legend, he’s played at the highest level of our game, done so much.”
