Cristiano Ronaldo scored a penalty and former Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran scored twice as Al-Nassr beat Iranian side Esteghlal to move into the quarter-finals of the AFC Champions League.

After a goalless draw in the first leg, which Ronaldo missed, the Saudi side did not take long to take the lead.

A slack pass from Seted Hosseini was seized upon by Colombia forward Duran, and he lobbed the ball home with class.

Ronaldo went close with a free-kick before he buried a penalty which was won by former Liverpool forward Sadio Mane.

Esteghlal had a mountain to climb which got steeper before the break when Mehran Ahmdi was sent off for a second bookable offence.

That took any sting out of the tie and after Ronaldo twice went close, Duran did find a third goal of the night, converting Angelo’s pass from close range.

Al-Nassr have never won the AFC Champions League and will find out their opponents in the last eight in a draw on Friday 14 March.

Ronaldo won the Champions League in Europe on five occasions – with Manchester United in 2008 and Real Madrid in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018.
