Agent explains how Liverpool outmanoeuvred rivals to land Pecsi

Liverpool’s summer business continues to raise eyebrows across Europe – and one agent has just revealed why.

One of Hungary’s most successful football agents has delivered a fascinating insight into how Liverpool landed one of their surprise summer additions.

Armin Pecsi, the 20-year-old Hungarian goalkeeper, joined us from Puskas Akademia earlier this window for a modest £1.5 million fee.

Now, his representative – Matyas Esterhazy – has claimed in an interview with M4Sport.hu that our decision to sign the youngster defied traditional scouting biases.

“It is not uncommon, but neither is a talent like Armin,” Esterhazy explained.

“This is the result of a long work and planning… but we are still in the construction phase that we initially defined with his family.”

Esterhazy revealed that despite Pecsi’s standout data, Hungarian observers often doubted the shot-stopper due to his slight physique.

“Armin’s eye test was questionable for many in Hungary… but the numbers don’t lie,” the agent stated, highlighting that the keeper ranked third in Europe for goals prevented last season – a stat that caught our analysts’ attention.

As Liverpool have already signed Florian Wirtz this summer and are being linked with more strategic moves, this signing offers another glimpse into how our transfer strategy continues to evolve under Richard Hughes and Arne Slot.

It’s also worth noting that Esterhazy’s agency also represents Dominik Szoboszlai, offering further Hungarian connections within our squad and suggesting the club’s recruitment in Eastern Europe is becoming more sophisticated.

Our No.8 is now having to pit himself against Florian Wirtz but the same agent showing faith in Pecsi, is also backing the midfielder to excel alongside our record signing.

Interestingly, Esterhazy also addressed wider issues in talent development, claiming: “The problem lies within the academy system… there are no players.”

His comments offer a rare glimpse into how data-led recruitment – something we’ve leaned into since the early days of Michael Edwards and FSG – is continuing to deliver results.

With Arne Slot preparing for his second season after lifting the Premier League in his first, building depth in goal makes sense, particularly after the permanent departure of Caoimhin Kelleher and with Vitezslav Jaros and Harvey Davies leaving on loan.

Pecsi has the strange position of being one of three new ‘keepers arriving at the club, with Alisson Becker and Giorgi Mamardashvili competing for our No.1 spot and another new arrival expected to be our third choice ahead of the Hungarian.
