The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 is all set to kick off on March 22, promising another thrilling season of high-octane cricket. Fans worldwide are eagerly waiting to witness their favorite teams battle it out for the coveted title. With franchises making key changes to their squads and strategies, the tournament is expected to be more competitive than ever.

AB de Villiers picks the 4 semifinalists of the 2025 edition

Former South African cricketer and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) legend AB de Villiers has shared his predictions for the four teams he believes will make it to the playoffs in IPL 2025. Known for his sharp cricketing acumen and deep understanding of the game, De Villiers’ insights are highly regarded among fans and experts alike.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, De Villiers named Mumbai Indians (MI), RCB, Gujarat Titans (GT), and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) as the teams likely to secure a place in the playoffs.

“I think Mumbai Indians can reach the playoffs. I definitely think RCB will also reach the playoffs this time. Because this time the team is in balance and then Gujarat Titans is also a contender for the playoffs. I think defending champion KKR will also be in the playoff race and can be successful in making its place in the playoffs. These are my four teams that can reach the playoffs,” said De Villiers.

His prediction has sparked debates, especially due to the exclusion of five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) from his list. De Villiers acknowledged that CSK is a strong side but stuck to his choices.

“Yes, I have not kept CSK. It is a strong team, CSK fans may be disappointed, but I will go with these four teams only,” added De Villiers.

How the 4 sides have performed in the cash-rich league

Mumbai Indians (MI)

Mumbai Indians are the most successful franchise in IPL history, having won the title five times. They have consistently been among the top teams in the league and will aim to add another trophy to their cabinet in 2025.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB)

Despite boasting a star-studded lineup over the years, RCB have yet to win their maiden IPL title. With De Villiers backing them to reach the playoffs, all eyes will be on the Bengaluru-based franchise to see if they can finally break their title drought.

Gujarat Titans (GT)

Gujarat Titans made an immediate impact in the IPL, winning the championship in their debut season in 2022. They have been a strong contender in recent years, and their inclusion in De Villiers’ prediction highlights their consistency.

Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR)

The defending champions, Kolkata Knight Riders, have lifted the IPL trophy three times. With a balanced squad and proven match-winners, they will look to continue their dominance and successfully defend their title in 2025.
