As Manchester United’s turbulent season continues, speculation is mounting over the future of their current manager, Ruben Amorim. Despite his arrival in November as Erik ten Hag’s successor, Amorim has struggled to implement his philosophy, leaving United languishing in 14th place in the Premier League with only 33 points from 81 available. Given this alarming run of form, there are suggestions that his tenure may be short-lived.

With Amorim’s position under scrutiny, reports suggest that a high-profile candidate is already waiting in the wings—former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez. Having taken a sabbatical since his departure from Camp Nou, Xavi has been linked to several managerial vacancies across Europe. However, the latest reports indicate that if the Red Devils were to part ways with Amorim, the 45-year-old Spaniard would be open to taking the job—under certain conditions.

According to reports from Spanish outlet El Nacional, Xavi has laid out a clear vision for Manchester United should he accept the role. His demands include a major squad overhaul, with specific players he wants to bring in and others he is willing to offload.

One of his biggest requests is the acquisition of two Barcelona stars: Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araujo. United have long been admirers of De Jong, who was a key target during Erik ten Hag’s reign. However, despite their previous pursuit, the Dutch midfielder has consistently expressed his desire to remain at Barcelona. Similarly, Araujo has been linked with United in the past, but securing his signature would be an expensive and challenging task.

Alongside these potential signings, the 45-year-old Spaniard has also reportedly identified three current Manchester United players who he deems surplus to requirements.

Three players on the chopping block – Who are they?

Xavi’s proposed squad cleanse would reportedly see Alejandro Garnacho, Andre Onana, and Matthijs de Ligt make way as part of a restructuring plan. The Argentine, one of United’s brightest young stars, has been the subject of transfer speculation in recent months. Despite his undeniable talent, reports suggest that the Spanish coach does not see him as an essential part of his tactical setup. This decision would certainly divide opinions, given Garnacho’s growing influence at the club.

Meanwhile, Onana’s tenure as United’s first-choice goalkeeper has been turbulent. The Cameroonian shot-stopper arrived from Inter to replace David de Gea, but a series of inconsistent performances have cast doubt over his long-term future. If Xavi takes over, it appears the Cameroon international would be among the first casualties of the new regime.

Finally, De Ligt, who only recently arrived from Bayern Munich, has surprisingly found himself on Xavi’s transfer list. The Dutch defender was brought in to strengthen the Old Trafford backline, but his future now seems uncertain if the managerial change occurs.
