‘We’re talking to a ton of teams’ – Seattle Seahawks GM John Schneider on DK Metcalf trade request

One day after news of DK Metcalf’s trade request was revealed, Seattle Seahawks general manager John Schneider addressed this major twist in the offseason.

Schneider made his weekly appearance on Seattle Sports 710 with hosts Bob Stelton and Dave Wyman, and while I’m sure many were champing at the bit wanting to know about the re-signing of Josh Jobe and the decision to release rotational defensive lineman Roy Robertson-Harris, Metcalf was the main story. Schneider confirmed both the request and that Seattle is actively fielding offers.

“Everything’s in a very cordial, professional place. Obviously DK has requested a trade and we are entertaining that,” Schneider said. “We are talking to a ton of teams, taking offers, seeing what that looks like, and yeah, here we go.

“The thing to understand here is that our responsibility to Jody Allen, the 12s, first and foremost is doing what’s absolutely best for the organization, and then what’s best for the the player,” he said. “Hopefully both those things merge and it’s an ideal situation. Sometimes that happens, sometimes it doesn’t. Hopefully in this situation it does, and that would be great. But worst-case scenario, I mean, we have an amazing, explosive, powerful athlete playing receiver for us again in 2025. So we’ll see where this goes.”

According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, the Seahawks are seeking a first- and third-round pick as suitable compensation for Metcalf, whom Russini also reported wanted a contract extension worth around $30 million/year.

As Field Gulls’ own John Gilbert noted, there are cap ramifications if the Seahawks trade Metcalf on either side of June 1. When asked about a possible deadline on a Metcalf trade, Schneider understandably targeted April’s NFL Draft.

“Yeah, I would say before the draft,” Schneider said when asked if there was any sort of deadline on a Metcalf trade. “You definitely want to know what’s going on before draft time because he’s such an important part of our our team, the organization, the offensive philosophy that these guys want to move forward with on our new coaching staff. We want to know how we’re going to compensate for his loss if he’s not with us.”

And yes, as far as the whole “news leaking on the day Tyler Lockett got released” situation, Schneider said it was “probably not intentional” but nevertheless was “very disappointed” that the tribute to Lockett throughout the day was overshadowed by the Metcalf story.
