Lionel Messi‘s absence from Inter Miami’s starting lineup for their MLS match against Houston Dynamo today sparked immediate speculation and concern amongst fans.

However, Inter Miami manager Javier Mascherano quickly clarified the situation, explaining that the decision to rest Messi was a planned and proactive measure to safeguard the player’s well-being, considering the team’s recent busy schedule and the upcoming international fixtures for the Argentina national team.

Mascherano explained that Messi was rested to allow him adequate recovery time following a period of intense activity. This decision also takes into account Argentina’s upcoming World Cup qualifying matches against Uruguay and Brazil at the end of March.

By resting Messi against Houston, the coaching staff aims to optimize his fitness and ensure his full availability and peak condition for both club and country in the coming weeks. This proactive approach prioritizes the long-term well-being of the star player.

Inter Miami’s other injury concerns

In addition to Messi’s absence, Mascherano confirmed several other injury concerns within the Inter Miami squad. Fafa Picault and Marcelo Weigandt are ruled out through injury, and David Martínez, Drake Callender, and Yannick Bright are all doubtful due to various fitness issues. Tomás Avilés is also suspended for the match. These multiple absences present significant selection challenges for Mascherano.

Messi’s return to the starting lineup is anticipated for Inter Miami’s next match, the first leg of their Concacaf Champions League Round of 16 tie against Cavalier FC on Thursday. This crucial match, against a significantly less experienced opponent, will be a vital test of Inter Miami’s ability to manage the various competitions they participate in.

Given the numerous absences, Inter Miami’s predicted lineup against Houston Dynamo is: Oscar Ustari; Ian Fray, Noah Allen, Maximiliano Falcón, Jordi Alba; Sergio Busquets, Federico Redondo; Tadeo Allende, Benjamín Cremaschi, Telasco Segovia; Luis Suárez.

This lineup, while containing experienced players such as Busquets and Suárez, clearly shows the significant impact of the various absences, with several younger players having to fill crucial positions.
