Backed by Sir Mo Farah, Run GP aims to create an innovative team-based run series involving pro athletes, influencers and celebrities

Sir Mo Farah is backing a new and innovative running endurance racing series that transforms Formula 1 circuits into world class running venues.

The initiative is called Run GP – a flagship series of the Global Running League (GRL) – and its aim is to revolutionise running and reach new markets through the merging of elite competition, mass participation and high stakes entertainment.

Unlike traditional marathon racing, RunGP has a team based format, integrating elite athletes, influencers and celebrity backed squads to engage both competitors and fans alike.

The inaugural RunGP, which will be streamed live on DAZN, will take place at the Lusail International Circuit in Doha (May 9-10), which is home to the Qatar Grand Prix. Other F1 tracks for this year’s series are yet to be announced.

The main event will be a high-stakes elite team relay, featuring four squads competing over seven 1km laps. There will also be a mass participation race over 7.032km – one sixth of a marathon – designed for runners of all levels.

Farah’s involvement in the project extends to a youth focused event called ‘One Mo Mile’, which sees kids race over a mile around the Lusail International Circuit.

“When I watch athletics, to me, it’s not as exciting as it once was,” Farah told The Independent. “How do we make athletics exciting? How do we make running exciting? How do you make running this big global event?

“And that’s what we’re trying in every way that we can and connect. But this idea really is to make this league something that has never been heard of and make history.”

Run GP states that one of their unique selling points is their ability to use technology to enhance the experience for those both competing and watching.

One example of this is advanced biometrics, showcasing real time heart rate, perspiration levels and AI driven race analytics.

“For too long, running has been treated as an individual pursuit,” said Marcel Muenster, CEO of RunGP. “We’re introducing a new, commercially viable format where the spectacle matches the sport, where technology enhances the viewing experience and where participation is accessible to all. The potential for innovation in running has been untapped and we intend to change that.

“Running is the most accessible sport in the world but it has lacked a structured competitive league. RunGP provides the missing piece, creating an experience that excites both runners and spectators. With elite team competitions and mass participation at iconic circuits, we are turning running into something bigger than ever before.”
