Hayley Matthews returned to form with the bat as she scored a match-winning half-century against UP Warriorz on Wednesday, February 26, at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru.
Having aggregated just 32 runs in the first three games, the West Indies skipper would have hoped for a productive outing with the bat against the Warriorz on Wednesday. After restricting the Deepti Sharma-led side to 142/9, Matthews lost her partner Yastika Bhatia in the fourth over. She struggled to time the ball up front, but she didn’t throw her wicket away.
In the 16th over, the all-rounder cut loose as she took the attack to Grace Harris. After Nat Sciver-Brunt gave her the strike off the first ball, Matthews hit a short delivery to the mid-wicket boundary. This was also a no ball, adding insult to injury. The following ball went for a maximum as Matthews danced down the track and slogged across the line. The deep mid-wicket fielder had a chance to stop the boundary, but she parried it over the ropes.

Matthews took a single off the following delivery to bring up her half-century. Sciver-Brunt gave her the strike for the last couple of deliveries and both went for boundaries. The first one was streaky as Matthews tried to drive hard through the off-side but only managed a thick edge that went past the keeper. The following delivery was another half-tracker and the 26-year-old dispatched it through mid-wicket with a pull shot.
Matthews was eventually dismissed for 59 after facing 50 balls. She hit seven fours and two sixes during her knock. Nat Sciver-Brunt (75*) and Harmanpreet Kaur (4*) finished proceedings as Mumbai registered a comprehensive eight-wicket win to move to the top of the points table.
