After going 15-2 on the season — a franchise record — the Kansas City Chiefs failed in their quest for a third straight Super Bowl win with a 00-00 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX at Caesars Superdome in New Orleans on Sunday night.
The Eagles drove to midfield on the game’s opening drive. But on a fourth-and-2 completion that gained 32 yards, the conversion was called back on an offensive pass interference penalty on A.J. Brown. Philadelphia punted. The Chiefs also did little on their opening drive, gaining just 12 yards before the Eagles forced a punt.
Philadelphia came back with a 7-play, 54-yard drive that ended with a 1-yard “tush push” touchdown by Jalen Hurts that gave the Eagles a 7-0 lead. Then Kansas City went three-and-out when Patrick Mahomes couldn’t convert a third-and-3 under pressure.
On their next drive, the Eagles drove well into Kansas City territory. George Karlaftis collected a sack on a third-and-4 that would have forced a punt, but Charles Omenihu’s neutral-zone infraction continued the drive. Two plays later, though, Bryan Cook intercepted Hurts at Kansas City’s 2-yard line.
But Kansas City couldn’t capitalize, punting after just three plays. Philadelphia drove 32 yards on seven plays before the Chiefs forced a 48-yard Jake Elliott field goal that gave the Eagles a 10-0 lead at the midpoint of the second quarter. Kansas City’s next drive began with back-to-back sacks — and then Cooper DeJean intercepted Mahomes’ third-and-16 pass, returning it 38-yard touchdown that extended Philadelphia’s lead to 17-0 with 7:03 left in the half.
The Chiefs went three-and-out again before forcing an Eagles punt with 1:56 left in the half — and on their first play, Mahomes was intercepted on the Kansas City 14-yard line. The Eagles then extended their lead to 24-0 with a 12-yard touchdown pass to A.J. Brown. Kansas City punted again with 34 seconds left in the half, ceding the field to the halftime show.
The Chiefs began the second half with a five-play drive that included two sacks before Matt Araiza’s punt. Philadelphia turned in a 12-play drive that took nearly seven minutes off the clock before Kansas City could finally stop the drive. A field goal extended the Eagles’ lead to 27-0.
Kansas City’s offense reached past midfield on a Mahomes scramble, but the play was called back after a holding penalty on Jawaan Taylor. Two plays later, Mahomes fouth-and-5 pass fell incomplete, giving Philadelphia the ball at the Kansas City 46-yard line. One play later, Hurts found DeVonta Smith for a 46-yard touchdown pass to make the score 34-0.
Then the Chiefs finally got the ball moving. Xavier Worthy caught a 50-yard pass that sparked a five-play drive that ended with his own 24-yard touchdown catch. After a two-point conversion failed, the Eagles still held a 34-6 lead. Kansas City’s defense managed a stop on Philadelphia’s next drive, forcing a 48-yard field goal to make the score 37-6 with just under 10 minutes remaining in the game.
But on the Chiefs’ next offensive play, Mahomes was strip-sacked, giving the Eagles the ball inside field goal range. Unable to move the ball further, Philadelphia settled for a 50-yard field goal to give it a 40-6 with 8:05 left. Kansas City replied with a 12-play, 75-yard drive that concluded with a 7-yard touchdown pass to DeAndre Hopkins with 2:58 remaining. That made the score 40-14 with 2:58 left.
After his defense forced a turnover on downs, Mahomes went for broke, hitting Worthy with a 50-yard touchdown pass. After another two-point conversion (and a failed onside kick), the game ended as a stunning 40-22 defeat.
