Chelsea splurged like no other team as they sought to reignite success by brute force in the transfer market in the last couple of seasons. Among the star names they were able to attract ahead of teams like Liverpool was the Portuguese forward João Félix.

However, since arriving at Stamford Bridge, Félix’s career has been a rollercoaster—one that has now taken another dramatic twist. With Felix now poised to swap the blue of Chelsea for the red and black of AC Milan on yet another loan deal, more than a few eyebrows are being raised.

Just six months after returning to Stamford Bridge following a previous loan stint, Félix is heading to Serie A and leaves some burning questions swirling about his future and Chelsea’s strategy.

The Need for Improvement

Having very briefly come within touching distance of Liverpool in the league, a massive drop in form has seen the Blues since fall irreparably behind. With their odds for a top-four finish now slipping to 4/6, it’s going to be challenging to secure Champions League football next season. For most betting fans, many have now chosen to explore high-stakes betting without GamStop. According to iGaming expert Vlad Grindu, these sites provide a workaround for punters to avoid harsh local restrictions like the GamStop program and the betting limits imposed by the UK Gambling Commission. With a wider range of odds, fewer restrictions, and more generous bonuses on offer too, most punters would be better off staying clear of placing money on Chelsea until the team can show more consistency.

Chelsea’s current form and position can best be described as a rebuilding work in progress—and that’s putting it kindly. Having invested far more heavily than teams like Liverpool, and very publicly pipping the Reds to some key players like Moises Caicedo and João Félix, it’s the Scousers who are having the last laugh as they sit atop both the Premier League and Champions League tables.

In stark contrast, Chelsea’s results have been inconsistent, leaving them far adrift from their expected position. While there is a renewed focus on squad cohesion and tactical stability, the overall competitiveness of the team has left a lot to be desired—especially given the amount of investment pumped into the team.

With players like Félix not even able to find a place in the team’s bloated squad that somehow sees the Blues still hunting for more midfield talent, these questions will likely linger—regardless of how Félix performs in Italy. The club’s performance in the remainder of the season will be closely watched. One positive that may come of the latest move for Félix is that if he does rediscover his best at Milan, Chelsea will have the option of a fantastic player to recall.

Why It’s a Gamble

With Félix having woefully underwhelmed during his brief time with Chelsea, the club is effectively gambling that he will return to his best form if given enough game time. However, this is one gamble that has a range of factors that complicate how it could all play out. After all, the two leagues have drifted quite far apart in the last two decades in terms of quality.

While teams like Milan, Napoli, Inter, and Atalanta have shown flashes of brilliance in recent seasons, there’s no doubt that there still remains a chasm between the quality of the Premier League and Serie A at the moment. AC Milan are like the poster child for this. Even after winning the scudetto again, when paired against teams like Liverpool in the Champions League, they found themselves severely outplayed.

As a result, many fans doubt if anything can be gleaned from Félix rediscovering his form during this loan spell. Even if he does, there are no guarantees that it will easily translate if he’s thrown back into the Premier League where he’s looked very underwhelming at times. AC Milan, themselves no strangers to fluctuating fortunes, are also taking a calculated risk on Félix. While his talent is undeniable, his consistency has been a recurring concern.

Either way, only time will tell how Félix’s fortunes will fare in the future. Most Chelsea fans hope he can again find the kind of form that made him such a sought-after player in the first place. If so, he certainly could become a very valuable asset in helping the Blues challenge for major silverware again.

The Weight on His Shoulders

From the moment he burst onto the scene with Benfica, Félix has carried the weight of immense expectations. He was touted as the next big thing in Portuguese football, a player capable of reaching the heights of Cristiano Ronaldo. However, his career has been marked by flashes of brilliance interspersed with periods of inconsistency.

The pressure to deliver has clearly taken its toll at times, and he has struggled to find a settled role despite a CV that now includes names like Atletico Madrid, Chelsea, and Barcelona. This latest loan move to Milan represents another chance for Félix to shed the burden of expectation and focus on finding his best form. If he can do this, there’s no doubt he can earn himself a recall to Chelsea and another chance to light up the Premier League.
