Devin Haney’s Mental State Questioned By Henry Garcia Before Ramirez Bout

Ryan Garcia’s dad, Henry Garcia, is concerned about Devin Haney’s mindset in his fight against Jose Ramirez in New York. He thinks that if Haney (31-0, 15 KOs) gets dropped by Ramirez, “it could mess him up.”

Whether Haney’s rematch with Ryan Garcia is contingent on him winning the fight against Jose Ramirez is unclear. If that’s the deal Turki Al-Sheikh gave Haney, he’s got to be worried sick. That’s pressure. There’s a boatload of money Haney can make in the rematch with Kingry, and Ramirez could ruin all that,

Haney’s Fragile State

We don’t know where Haney is mentally after that loss. Obviously, his decision not to defend his WBC light welterweight title against Sandor Martin and to take an entire year off can be seen as a sign that his self-confidence has abandoned him. He’s never been the type to take breaks, and the timing is suspicious.

Devin could already be “messed up” as it is, losing to Kingry in a three-knockdown, 12-round decision defeat on April 20th. Getting in the ring with the 2012 Olympian Jose Ramirez could be a nightmare for Haney, significantly if he gets dropped three or four times. Ramirez won’t take breaks like Ryan did in beating the stuffing out of Devin.

He’s more of a consistent fighter who continues to punish his opponents the entire fight and has excellent stamina. Garcia looked like he wasn’t in the shape to finish Haney after he hurt him in the seventh round.

Of course, some would argue that referee Harvey Dock saved Devin’s hide by stopping the action to penalize Ryan for hitting on the break in that round. Dock’s move gave Haney time to recover.

Henry has seen the former WBC and WBO light welterweight champion Ramirez fight, and he’s too good a fighter for Haney to fight. He’s coming back from the hell he went through in his beating against Kingry last April.

Haney would be coming out of the frying pan straight into the fire by taking on Ramirez (29-2, 18 KOs) on the undercard of Ryan Garcia vs. Rolando ‘Rolly’ Romero at Times Square in New York.

The Ramirez Risk

“If Jose Ramirez cracks him, I’m worried for Haney because, psychologically, I don’t think he’s ready for it for something like that,” said Henry Garcia to MillCity Boxing about his worries for Devin Haney’s preparation for his fight against former WBC/WBO 140-lb champion Jose Ramirez in May.

“If he gets dropped, it’s going to mess him up. Again, Jose is no pushover. If he catches him and drops him, that’s going to go bad for Haney.”
