Texans Hire Former Rams Assistant Nick Caley As Offensive Coordinator

The Houston Texans announced that they have hired former Los Angeles Rams assistant Nick Caley as their new offensive coordinator. He is replacing Bobby Slowik, who was let go by the team last month.

Caley was the Rams’ tight ends coach over the last two seasons and had the additional responsibility of being the pass game coordinator in 2024.

He was a popular name in this offseason’s coaching cycle as he also interviewed with the New York Jets and Tampa Bay Buccaneers for their respective offensive coordinator vacancies.

Caley began his coaching career as an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots in 2015. He then served as the team’s tight ends coach from 2017-2022. Caley has coached the likes of Rob Gronkowski, Tyler Higbee, Hunter Henry and Jonnu Smith, among many others at the tight end position over the last decade.

Prior to his time in the NFL, Caley was a defensive assistant in college football. He had stints with John Carroll (2005), Akron (2006-2007), Auburn (2008), Iowa State (2009-2011), Eastern Illinois (2012), Arkansas (2013) and Florida Atlantic (2014).

Caley is a two-time Super Bowl champion with the Patriots. Having gained valuable experience under Bill Belichick and Sean McVay, he will look to bring that expertise to the Texans in his first season calling offensive plays.

Caley is the third assistant to leave the Rams this offseason, joining John Streicher (Patriots) and AC Carter (Carolina Panthers).

Rams intend to trade Cooper Kupp

Cooper Kupp’s future with the Rams has been murky going back to last year’s trade deadline when reports were coming out about the possibility of dealing the star wide receiver.

Kupp made it clear that he wants to stay with the Rams, but his drop in production, inability to stay healthy and big contract have forced the organization to go in a different direction.

The receiver took to social media on Monday evening to announce that the Rams have informed him they will try to trade him, which he doesn’t agree with.

Kupp has been a model of consistency and professionalism since the Rams drafted him in the third round of the 2017 NFL Draft.

His best season, of course, came in 2021 when he won the receiving triple crown and received Offensive Player of the Year honors in the regular season. Kupp then had a stellar postseason as well, bringing home Super Bowl MVP honors.

Injuries hampered Kupp the last few seasons, but at age 31, he still believes he has some good years left in him. Unfortunately, it does not appear those years will come with the Rams.
