David Benavidez is ready to settle his grudge match with David Morrell.
At Friday’s ceremonial weigh-in for Benavidez’s upcoming bout against Morrell in Las Vegas, the WBC interim light heavyweight champion successfully made weight at 174.2 pounds, while WBA light heavyweight champion David Morrell weighed in at an identical 174.2 pounds.
This is only Benavidez’s second light heavyweight title fight. The undefeated “Mexican Monster” was the WBC interim super middleweight champion before moving up to 175 pounds last June to win his interim light heavyweight title with a unanimous decision win over Oleksandr Gvozdyk. Overall, Benavidez’s record stands at 29-0.
Similarly, this is only Morrell’s second bout in the light heavyweight division, having previously held the WBA super middleweight title from 2021 through 2023. The undefeated Morrell then jumped up to 175 pounds last August where a won a unanimous decision over Radivoje Kalajdzic, claiming the vacant WBA light heavyweight title. His overall record stands at 11-0.
Following their weigh-in, Morrell was brimming with confidence ahead of their matchup on Saturday.
“I don’t need any keys to defeat Benavidez because I’ve already seen what he’s about, and it’s all fake,” Morrell said. “So I’m going to be ready with what I’ve got to come out on top. …
“One thing is to say you’re going to do it, the other one is to do it. Very, very different. Let’s see if he’s actually able to do what he says.”
Benavidez was similarly confident, delivering a succinct message for his opponent and the fans.
“This Saturday, like I said, all the talking is done. I’m going to beat the f*ck out of David Morrell,” Benavidez said. “… I’m going to beat the f*ck out of David Morrell. He’s going to see who the Mexican Monster is this Saturday.”
