A bizarre goal for Sheffield United helped them to a 2-1 victory over Manchester City on this day back in 2008 at Bramall Lane.

The thousands of Manchester City fans made a great display with blue and white flags, confetti and balloons as the players emerged from the tunnel. Most of the balloons were cleared from the pitch by the time the game kicked off, but some remained around the edge of the pitch.

In the 12th minute of the game, Lee Martin dribbled down the left wing and crossed the ball in low across goal. Several balloons were blowing around in the penalty area and the ball hit one of them and wrong-footed City defender Michael Ball, giving United striker Luton Shelton an easy tap-in.

Jon Stead doubled the home side’s lead in the 24th minute before Daniel Sturridge got one back for the visitors. The game ended 2-1 to United.

There must be something about wearing red and white stripes that means you can benefit from things being thrown onto the pitch by visiting fans, because Sunderland scored a bizarre goal in similar circumstances in 2009 You can read all about that goal here.
