Dallas Mavericks superstar Anthony Davis underwent a procedure to repair a detached retina that he suffered during the 2024-25 season, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Tuesday.

Anthony Davis Will Be Ready For Training Camp

Davis is expected to be healthy in time for training camp, his first with the Mavs since being dealt to Dallas in the blockbuster trade that sent Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers.

In his Mavs debut on Feb. 8 against the Houston Rockets, Davis suffered a left adductor strain that sidelined him for roughly six weeks. He recorded 26 points, 16 rebounds, seven assists, and three blocks before exiting.

According to Basketball Reference, Davis played in just 11 games for Dallas last season, including two play-in games in which he averaged 33.5 points and nine rebounds.

Davis sustained his right eye injury in Dallas’ 120-118 win over the Atlanta Hawks on April 2. His teammate, Daniel Gafford, inadvertently elbowed him in his eye.

Davis left the game bleeding and returned with a bandage above his right eye. A cut above his eye required four stitches. He missed the following game, but that contest fell on the first night of a back-to-back.

The former NBA champion finished with 34 points against Atlanta, shooting 14-of-23 (60.9%) from the field, 2-of-4 (50%) from 3-point range, and 4-of-4 (100%) at the foul line.

Kyrie Irving To Remain Out Until At Least January 2026

Davis and No. 1 overall pick Cooper Flagg have their work cut out for them next season, as star point guard Kyrie Irving is recovering from a torn ACL and could potentially remain sidelined until at least January 2026.

Irving agreed to a three-year, $119 million contract extension with the Mavs last month. The three-time All-NBA member declined his $43 million player option for next season before signing his new deal.

Mavericks center Daniel Gafford also agreed to sign a three-year contract extension worth nearly $60 million. Gafford’s agents, Mike George and Shy Saee of Klutch Sports, negotiated the new deal through 2028-29.

That move also came days after fellow big man Dwight Powell picked up his $4 million player option for the 2025-26 season, according to NBA insider Marc Stein.

Powell, who turns 34 on July 20, is set to return for a 12th season with Dallas.

In 55 games (three starts) this Dallas this season, Powell averaged a career-low 2.1 points, 2.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 10 minutes per contest while shooting 68.9% from the field and 65.1% from the foul line.

Barring any injuries, the 6-foot-10 Powell is currently set to play behind Anthony Davis, Derek Lively II, and Gafford on the Mavericks’ frontcourt depth chart.
