Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma expressed deep sorrow following the incident that severely injured Jamal Musiala during their Club World Cup quarterfinal clash against Bayern Munich. The German midfielder suffered a fractured fibula and dislocated ankle and is set to undergo surgery.

“I’m really shaken by what happened,” Donnarumma told La Gazzetta dello Sport. “It was certainly never my intention to hurt Musiala.”

“He didn’t mean to hurt him,” says his agent

The goalkeeper’s agent, Vicenzo Raiola, also defended Donnarumma’s actions: “It’s unfair to say he wanted to injure Musiala. We wish him a fast recovery.”

Raiola emphasized how quickly the incident occurred: “Everything happened in a split second. Gigio got to the ball first and had no time to stop. In just an instant, a play can lead to a penalty—or worse.”

Regarding Donnarumma walking away after the challenge, Raiola clarified: “It wasn’t out of indifference. He’s a very sensitive person. He stepped aside so the medics could attend to Musiala.”

Musiala to undergo surgery in Munich

Bayern Munich confirmed that Musiala, 22, has returned to Germany and will undergo surgery for the fractured fibula and dislocated ankle. The young star had just come back after months of recovery from a previous injury.

In the locker room at halftime, Donnarumma broke his usual routine by checking his phone to send a personal message: “I’m truly affected. It wasn’t intentional.”
