Lionel Messi‘s future at Inter Miami has come under scrutiny in recent weeks, with rumors swirling about a possible move away from MLS. Now, after sealing his return to boyhood club Rosario Central, Argentina legend Angel Di Maria has weighed in on the chances of Messi making a similar homecoming.

Di Maria returned to Argentina following an 18-year career in Europe, where he starred for elite clubs such as Real Madrid, Manchester United, Benfica, and Paris Saint-Germain. His destination was Rosario Central—the club he supported as a child and where he began his professional journey.

During his unveiling press conference, Di Maria was asked whether Messi or any of Argentina’s national team players had reached out to him. He didn’t hesitate to answer: “I spoke with Leo Messi and many of the guys because obviously I have a really beautiful relationship with them.

“They’re happy that I was able to achieve what I wanted. They were following everything that was happening, they sent me messages, called me—they were always very present. They’re like brothers, more than friends,” Di Maria said. He went on to describe Messi’s personal reaction to the news.

“He wrote to me recently, he let a bit of time pass because it was normal—with everything going on, my phone was blowing up—and he texted me the next day. He congratulated me and wished me the best. He told me he was happy that I was able to fulfill my dream because we talked a lot, and he knew that my family’s wish was complete, so he was very happy,” Di Maria told reporters.

Could Messi return to Argentina?

At 38, and with his long-term future at Inter Miami still uncertain, speculation continues to mount regarding Messi’s plans leading up to the 2026 World Cup. Reports have even linked Messi to Saudi Pro League club Al Ahli, who are monitoring the situation closely.

Messi, famously associated with Newell’s Old Boys—Rosario Central’s archrivals—could potentially set the stage for a unique derby clash if he returns to Argentina: Messi on one side, Di Maria on the other. When asked about that scenario, Di Maria responded carefully.

“These are personal decisions. Everyone chooses what’s best for their family, and you don’t want to interfere in someone else’s life. If he has the chance to fulfill his dream, then welcome it. He’s a friend, and I care about him a lot,” the winger told reporters.
