Novak storms into Wimbledon third round! – Novak Djokovic

Opportunity Knocks For Osaka, Who Is No Longer Running Scared on the Grass

Day Four at Wimbledon produced two dominant displays from the top seeds, a few throwback performances, and one dramatic five-set battle.

Novak Djokovic made light work of Dan Evans in a clinical Centre Court showing, while Jannik Sinner coasted past Aleksandar Vukic in straight sets.

Elsewhere, Sebastian Ofner upset 13th seed Tommy Paul, and Marin Cilic turned back the clock to knock out home favourite Jack Draper.

The top seeds are dropping like flies, with just two rounds completed, over half of the men’s top 32 seeds are already gone, including Zverev, Medvedev, Rune, and Tsitsipas.

There were also two suspended matches with Ben Shelton leading by two sets and 5 games to 4 against Rinky Hijikata and Gael Monfils and Martin Fucsovics tied at two sets all.

Full recap of day four below.

Djokovic Powers Past Evans

djokovic wimbledondjokovic wimbledon

Novak Djokovic secured a commanding victory over Daniel Evans on Thursday, winning 6-3, 6-2, 6-0 to advance to the third round.

Evans entered as one of the few players holding a posititve H2H against the Serb, but he never got close to extending it to 2-0.

The Brit has a well rounded grass court game but on a surface like Centre Court, Novak can easily counter what he has to offer.

Djokovic dropped just nine service points and handled Evans’ tricky slice backhand with ease in the one-hour, 47-minute match

Next, Djokovic faces fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic, who battled past Jesper de Jong 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4, for and I think that will be a walk in the park.

I was preparing well for the match, technically and tactically. I knew what I needed to do, and I executed perfectly. Sometimes you have these kinds of days when everything goes your way and everything flows. It’s good to be in the shoes and holding a racquet on a day like this, no question about it. Djokovic on his win.

Cilic Chops Draper

ciliccilic

Marin Cilic dashed British No. 1 Jack Draper’s Wimbledon aspirations, securing a 6-4, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4 victory in their second-round encounter.

Cilic hasn’t factored on tour of late having undergone two knee surgeries in recent years, but grass has always been a surface he excels on having made the final in 2017.

You only have to look at his 2014 US Open run to know what kind of game he can produce and he unleashed a powerful performance that outlassed the fourth seed in two hours and 39 minutes.

A lot of recency bias from the fans and the media often makes you think the current crop of players are taking tennis to new heights and the older guys have never seen such tennis. But it’s actually the reverse as Draper could not handle Cilic’s serve or his baseline game.

Playing at this level against Jack in front of this crowd is incredible. It’s been a long journey, but I never doubted myself. Cilic on his win.

Other Key Matches

Jaume Munar def. Fabian Marozsan 6-2, 6-3, 7-6(9)

After upsetting Bublik in round 1, Jaume Munar reached the Wimbledon third round for the first time, overcoming a tense win over Marozsan. Munar needed 11 match points to close out the match, navigating a tricky third-set tie-break where he saved a set point. The Spaniard outplayed Marozsan for most of the two-hour, 17-minute match and he’s been very steady this season as he enters the top 50.

Alex de Minaur def. Arthur Cazaux 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 6-0

De Minaur battled past qualifier Cazaux in two hours, 48 minutes. After dropping the first set, the Australian found his rhythm, facing no break points in the final three sets. He next faces August Holmgren who upset Tomas Machac in a 4 hour 39 minute five setter.

.Jakub Mensik def. Marcos Giron 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, 7-6(4)

The 19-year-old Czech advanced in two hours, 51 minutes, matching his best Grand Slam run. The youngest Czech man to reach this stage since Tomas Berdych in 2005.

Sebastian Ofner def. Tommy Paul 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 7-5

Sebastian Ofner upset 13th seed Tommy Paul in a 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, 7-5. Paul dominated the first set 6-1, but Ofner, buoyed by a strong serving performance, battled back. Both players had physical issus with Ofner receiving treatment for a wrist issue and Paul needing a medical timeout for his left ankle/foot after a smash at 4-4 in the second set.

Despite Paul grass-court pedigree, including a Queen’s Club title in 2024 and a Wimbledon quarterfinal run in 2024, Ofner’s serving display poved decisive.

August Holmgren def. Tomas Machac 7-6(5), 6-7(8), 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(10-5)

August Holmgren continued his remarkable Wimbledon run, upsetting 21st seed Tomas Machac in a thrilling 7-6(5), 6-7(8), 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(10-5) second-round match.

The four-hour, 38-minute battle saw Holmgren save three match points at 0-40 down while trailing 4-5 in the fourth set to keep his run alive where he came from a set and a break down in his first two rounds of qualfying, saved 3 match points against Watanuki to qualify and now this. Impressive.

Jannik Sinner def. Aleksandar Vukic 6-1, 6-1, 6-3

Top seed Jannik Sinner cruised to a 6-1, 6-1, 6-3 victory over Aleksandar Vukic in just 1 hour and 40 minutes. The world No. 1 saved all four break points faced and there is not much else to say, just a routine win against a guy who can’t really hurt him.
