Sergio Ramos has emerged as a key leader for Monterrey during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025, helping guide the team through the group stage and into the knockout round as the only Mexican side remaining in the tournament. Now, with Borussia Dortmund next in the round of 16, one of Ramos’ teammates has sent a strong message to the German powerhouse.

Monterrey heads into the matchup with confidence after a commanding 4-0 victory over Urawa Red Diamonds, which sealed their place in the next round. Midfielder Oliver Torres reflected on the club’s progress and emphasized how meaningful their run has been.

“The first thing Monterrey must do is value what we’ve accomplished. Getting out of the group wasn’t easy, and we did it — now we have to enjoy it,” the Spaniard said during the pre-match press conference. But Torres made it clear the team isn’t satisfied just yet.

“If we all give our best version, if we all understand that this is something unique, that it’s a privilege to be here and that it’s historic, then we’ll be ready to compete against anyone. It’ll be Borussia Dortmund, and I’m sure we’ll give our best version. It will be very hard for them to beat us — and if they do, the fans should know that we left everything on the field,” Torres stated.

Monterrey will face Borussia Dortmund on Tuesday at 9 p.m. ET at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. With the spotlight on the city, Rayados have a chance to make history in a Club World Cup that has already delivered its fair share of surprises.

Torres enjoying career resurgence in Monterrey

A product of Atlético Madrid’s academy, Torres had stops at Porto and Sevilla before making a bold move to Monterrey in July 2024. Since his arrival, he has become a pivotal figure in midfield. In 43 appearances, he has tallied six goals and six assists, quickly establishing himself as one of the club’s leaders.

Now playing alongside fellow Spaniard Sergio Ramos, Torres has no regrets about the move: “A year after coming to Monterrey, I can say it was the best decision I could have made. I changed my entire life to come to a country like Mexico and to a club like Rayados.”
