Novak vs Muller in R1 – Novak Djokovic

The 2025 Wimbledon Championships draw is here, with main draw action starting on Monday, June 30th at the All England Club.

Top seed Jannik Sinner, world No. 1, headlines a stacked men’s draw, while two-time defending champion Carlos Alcaraz aims for a historic third consecutive title.

Novak Djokovic, a seven-time champion, chases an eighth Wimbledon crown, and British No. 1 Jack Draper eyes a deep run with home support.

Exciting? Yes, to a degree, as grass is always good fun, but the reality is there are very few competent grass players out there, and if you were spoiled watching Federer at SW19, most things pale in comparison.

Complete draw analysis below.

Thoughts on the Draw

wimbledon presswimbledon press

First Quarter: Led by Jannik Sinner (1)

Seeded Players: Jannik Sinner (1), Lorenzo Musetti (7), Ben Shelton (10), Tommy Paul (13), Ugo Humbert (18), Grigor Dimitrov (19), Denis Shapovalov (27), Brandon Nakashima (29)

Notable First-Round Matchups:

Jannik Sinner (1) vs. Luca Nardi: The world No. 1 faces a fellow Italian whose aggressive style could spark an early test on grass.
Gael Monfils vs. Ugo Humbert (18): Monfils’ athleticism meets Humbert’s precise grass game, promising a high-energy clash.
Grigor Dimitrov (19) vs. Yoshihito Nishioka: Dimitrov’s grass play meets Nishioka’s scrappy counterpunching, a stylistic contrast with both of them known for mid-match retirements.
Ben Shelton (10) vs. Alex Bolt (Q): A potentially tricky match for Shelton.

Analysis

Jannik Sinner heads up this section as the top seed, and he is one of the leading contenders, given his world No. 1 ranking and his form over the last couple of seasons.

Musetti (7) is a potential quarterfinal opponent, but his first-round match against Basilashvili could be tricky if the qualifier brings his A-game.

Shelton’s big serve and Paul’s all-court play make them dangerous, but neither of them played well in the lead-up events, with Shelton not winning a match since breaking the top 10 and Paul losing to Evans in Eastbourne.

Dimitrov’s experience could see him advance, but he has been struggling physically lately. Shapovalov, a former semifinalist, adds wildcard potential but faces consistency challenges, so I think Sinner is a near-certain bet to make the quarters even if he’s still not quite over his French Open final loss.

Quarterfinal Prediction: Sinner vs. Musetti. Sinner’s consistency and grass-court prowess give him the edge, though Musetti’s stylish game could make it competitive if he finds rhythm.

Storylines

Sinner’s bid to dominate Wimbledon as world No. 1, shaking off any lingering French Open final disappointment.
Shapovalov’s chance to recapture his 2021 semifinal magic as a low seed.
Dimitrov’s physical condition under scrutiny.

Second Quarter: Led by Jack Draper (4)

Seeded Players: Jack Draper (4), Novak Djokovic (6), Alex de Minaur (11), Jakub Mensik (15), Tomas Machac (21), Flavio Cobolli (22), Alexander Bublik (28), Alex Michelsen (30)

Notable First-Round Matchups:

Jack Draper (4) vs. Sebastian Baez: The British No. 1 faces a grass-court no-hoper, but Baez’s grit could test Draper’s focus.
Novak Djokovic (6) vs. Alexandre Muller: The seven-time champion begins his title chase against a tricky but winnable opponent.
Jaume Munar vs. Alexander Bublik (28): Bublik’s unpredictable shotmaking, fresh off Halle success, meets Munar’s grinding style.

Analysis

Jack Draper, the British No. 1, leads this quarter and starts against grass-court no-hoper Seb Baez. Things get interesting after that with potential matches against Marin Cilic in the second round and Halle champion Sascha Bublik in the fourth round.

Cilic has a grass pedigree, but isn’t the player he once was. However, Bublik has shown both at Roland Garros and Halle that he’s in some of his career-best form, and his game translates well onto this surface. Although the Kazakh does face Munar in Round 1, who always puts in a decent performance, as Alcaraz found out at Queen’s.

Djokovic, the seven-time champion, is the standout threat despite his No. 6 seeding. His first-round match against Muller is potentially tricky but more than winnable. His path could include de Minaur or Machac in the fourth round, both capable of challenging on grass.

De Minaur’s speed always makes matches hard work, but it does look like a Draper-Djokovic quarterfinal is likely.

Quarterfinal Prediction: Draper vs. Djokovic. Djokovic’s experience likely prevails, but Draper’s aggressive game and home support could push him close in a blockbuster quarterfinal.

Storylines

Djokovic’s pursuit of an eighth Wimbledon title, potentially tying the all-time record.
Draper’s bid to become a British hero with a deep run at home.
Bublik’s Halle momentum making him a dangerous floater.

Third Quarter: Led by Alexander Zverev (3)

Seeded Players: Alexander Zverev (3), Taylor Fritz (5), Daniil Medvedev (9), Francisco Cerundolo (16), Karen Khachanov (17), Alexei Popyrin (20), Alejandro Davidovich Fokina (26), Matteo Berrettini (32)

Notable First-Round Matchups:

Taylor Fritz (5) vs. Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard: Two big servers collide with Mpetshi Perricard’s grass-court credentials, a potential early test.
Daniil Medvedev (9) vs. Ben Bonzi: Medvedev’s Halle final run faces Bonzi’s aggression, with grass suiting both.

Analsyis

Sascha Zverev, chasing his first Grand Slam (will that ever not be a part of a draw post?), anchors this quarter with his powerful baseline game.

Fritz, a two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist, is another threat with his big serve, and he’s currently still playing in Eastbourne as he bids to defend his title.

Mpetshi Perricard’s grass-court credentials could test him early, though, as even though the Frenchman hasn’t backed up his excellent 2024 season, the way he serves can take the racket out of your hand on grass.

Medvedev’s flat-hitting suits grass having made the semi-finals for the last two seasons, and he made the final in Halle, so I think he’s capable of another deep run.

The showcourts at Wimbledon typically lend themselves to longer rallies compared to what a traditional grass court plays like, which also favours him.

Berrettini, a former finalist, is a dangerous low seed, especially on grass, and could challenge for a deep run if he’s able to operate without the abdominal injury that seems to have plagued him over recent seasons.

Quarterfinal Prediction: Zverev vs. Fritz. Despite their recent head-to-head match, Zverev’s all-around game should edge Fritz’s on second-week courts, but Berrettini could disrupt the outcome if he regains his 2021 form.

Storylines

Zverev’s quest for his maiden Grand Slam on grass.
Berrettini’s comeback as a low seed after injury-plagued seasons, recalling his 2021 final.
Fritz’s Eastbourne form and bid to break through as an American contender.
Medvedev’s chance to leverage his Halle final run for a deep Wimbledon push.

Fourth Quarter: Led by Carlos Alcaraz (2)

Seeded Players: Carlos Alcaraz (2), Holger Rune (8), Frances Tiafoe (12), Andrey Rublev (14), Jiri Lehecka (23), Stefanos Tsitsipas (24), Felix Auger-Aliassime (25), Tommy Griekspoor (31)

Notable First-Round Matchups:

Holger Rune (8) vs. Nicolas Jarry (Q): Potential upset alert?
Cameron Norrie vs. Roberto Bautista Agut: Two gritty baseliners with grass experience promise a tactical battle.
Jenson Brooksby (WC) vs. Tommy Griekspoor (31): Brooksby’s unique game meets Griekspoor’s solidity on serve
Jacob Fearnley vs Joao Fonseca: Solid Brit vs Brazilian hype merchant. It could be an interesting crowd, with a mix of home support and, if they can secure tickets, plenty of fans for Fonseca, as there is a large Brazilian immigrant population residing in London (many of whom are doing so illegally).

Carlos Alcaraz, the two-time defending champion, headlines this quarter and is the heavy pre-tournament favourite.

Even a prime Fognini was never much of a handful on grass, so the Spaniard has a comfortable start. But there are some decent players in his section.

Auger-Aliassime is a potential third-round opponent, although you have to dig deep into the memory bank to remember the last time he turned up at a Grand Slam.

Rune, with his aggressive style, is a potential quarterfinal foe, but he’ll need to navigate a tricky draw that includes Tsitsipas, Lehecka and Griekspoor.

Rublev’s and Tiafoe are also in this section with potential for a run, but Alcaraz’s versatility and Wimbledon dominance make him the clear favourite to come through.

Quarterfinal Prediction: Alcaraz vs. Rune. Alcaraz’s dynamic play and title defence give him the edge, but Rune’s gritty firepower could make it a competitive battle.

Storylines

Alcaraz’s pursuit of a rare third consecutive Wimbledon title.
