What’s your least favorite Seattle Seahawks season ever?

If we’re going to look back on the history of Seattle Seahawks football as we approach season number 50, it can’t all be the warm and fuzzy feelings of favorite plays and favorite players.

Today’s discussion is all about your least favorite Seahawks seasons ever. Your least favorite season does not necessarily have to be one with a ton of losses. The 2017 Seahawks, for example, were a pretty dismal watch toward the end of what was a 9-7 season. This is also going to provide great perspective on the length of Seahawks fandom here, because if you’re like me you weren’t a Seahawks fan when they were repeatedly missing the playoffs in the 1990s. I wasn’t even alive for the historically bad 1992 offense.

I won’t hesitate to give you my answer. The 2009 Seahawks marked the start of life after Mike Holmgren. Tim Ruskell backed Jim Mora as Holmgren’s successor. Other than being the son of Mr. PLAYOFFS?! himself, Mora’s high point as an NFL coach came in 2004 when he took the Atlanta Falcons to the NFC Championship Game. Still, the 2008 Seahawks were injury-riddled and coming off a 4-12 wreck of a season in Holmgren’s finale.

Ruskell wasn’t interested in a full-scale rebuild and was pushing for an immediate return to the playoffs. He signed T.J. Houshmandzadeh to a huge free agent contract, extended Leroy Hill’s contract, traded Julian Peterson for Cory Redding to help the defensive line, and he signed defensive tackle Colin Cole to a five-year contract for some reason.

In the draft, Seattle took “safe” pick Aaron Curry at No. 4 overall and fetched a 2010 first-round pick from the Denver Broncos. They also traded back into the second round for Max Unger. The NFL world collectively gasped when Nick Reed was taken in the seventh round. Reed is not in the Pro Football Hall of Fame but that’s only because of a corrupt selection process.

Things started so well when the Seahawks shut out the St. Louis Rams 28-0 on opening day. Then Matt Hasselbeck got hurt in Week 2. The green uniforms against the Chicago Bears soon followed, along with Jim Mora throwing Olindo Mare under the bus for missing two field goals.

It’s those last four games that made the 2009 Seahawks unwatchable and necessitated a full reset.

Here was the touchdown log for the Seahawks during their season-ending four-game losing streak:

The Buccaneers game at home? Oh man. We obviously can’t get away with this John Morgan headline anymore and I’m not even sure it was permitted back in 2009, but it was warranted.

Jim Lawrence Mora officially tips the scales against Tim Ruskell. He is among the most incompetent leaders I have ever studied. He is considered like Caligula, fair like Stalin, confident like Marat and smart like a donut. This week, in order, he swapped his right guard and center after shaming and questioning the toughness of said center: Chris Spencer; He revealed that other teams perceive the Seahawks as soft and tacitly expressed his agreement; Voiced his thinking that for Seattle to be better, it needs more “dirtbags”; Led those dirtbags, through alternating three-man rushes and six-man blitzes, to its nadir as a modern franchise.

Mora was talking about “dirtbags” and throwing Chris Spencer under the bus and just being an all-around horror show as a head coach and as a leader. Matt Hasselbeck looked cooked (while Mora refused to play Seneca Wallace), the defense was an embarrassment, and Aaron Curry gave us a preview of his bust years to come.

On the plus side, the Seahawks’ first-rounder from Denver turned into Earl Thomas after a late-season Broncos collapse. Mora and Ruskell were canned and some fellas surnamed Carroll and Schneider stepped in.
