Comolli seeking Juventus reunion with Toulouse goalkeeper Guillaume Restes

As the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 kicked off in the United States, fans around the globe noted the absence of one of the sport’s most electrifying talents: Neymar Jr. At the age of 33 and in the twilight of a remarkable career, Neymar’s name had been heavily linked with a last-minute appearance at the tournament. The twist? It wouldn’t have been for a team he’s previously represented — but for an unexpected side making headlines in this year’s edition of the revamped Club World Cup.

The move ultimately didn’t happen, but the story behind Neymar’s flirtation with a surprise return to the competition is full of what-ifs, injury struggles, and personal loyalty — a rare blend in modern soccer’s often transactional world.

During a candid appearance on the Flow Podcast, the ex-Barcelona and PSG star confirmed that discussions had taken place with several clubs about a short-term deal to play in the Club World Cup. He admitted that one offer in particular almost became reality.

“I’m in good physical shape. We had these conversations with some teams to play in the [Club] World Cup,” Neymar said. “It was something that came very close to happening, but I preferred to stay to train a little more.”

The reason? The Brazilian veteran, despite claiming to be “100% physically”, acknowledged that he still lacked the sharpness to compete at the highest level. “I need to get better to be able to come back in good shape,” he added.

Unexpected club behind the attempt

The club that made the bold attempt to sign Neymar was eventually revealed to be Fluminense, the reigning South American champions. The Rio de Janeiro side, bolstered by stars like Thiago Silva and Ganso, had hoped Neymar would join their squad for the tournament and add flair to their campaign. A reunion with his former Brazil teammates was on the cards — and nearly became reality.

“Fluminense came very close to making it happen,” Neymar admitted in the interview. The team’s president, Mario Bittencourt, later elaborated on the talks in an interview with ESPN. “Neymar specifically said that he was very keen, but that at this moment he was very focused on his recovery, on helping Santos get out of the situation it is in,” Bittencourt explained.

“He made a point of speaking to us personally, explaining the reasons why he would not be accepting at this time. For me, he has to return to the national team as soon as he is 100% recovered.”
