Three weeks after the post-fight drug test for his rematch victory over Bruno Surace revealed traces of exogenous testosterone, Jaime Munguia’s B-sample likewise came back positive, teeing him up for punishment from the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC).
Munguia’s (45-2, 35 KO) team maintains his innocence, blaming the result on accidental ingestion. He is far from the first fighter to make that claim, but unless he can produce the actual supplement or food product in question, it’ll be an uphill battle to prove it.
We can almost certainly expect that victory over Surace, a wide unanimous decision, to be overturned to a No Contest. Odds are very good that he’ll face a suspension as well, and as the Conor Benn case showed, the BBBofC can be plenty punitive when it puts its mind to it. We’ll keep you appraised as the situation continues to develop.
