Manchester United are currently focusing on adding creativity to the forward line through the additions of two attacking midfielders.

Matheus Cunha has been confirmed as the first summer arrival, while INEOS are locked in talks with Brentford for Bryan Mbeumo to join the Brazilian.

This effectively means Bruno Fernandes is likely to be deployed in a more withdrawn role, as was often the case under Ruben Amorim last season.

But what about Mason Mount? The head coach has kept singing the praises of the former Chelsea ace, and he was most often deployed as one of the two No.10s last term.

Mount’s position under threat

Teamtalk have revealed that even if Mbeumo were to be signed, Amorim still feels the Englishman has a huge role to play due to his off-the-ball work-rate and versatility.

After all, the 26-year-old has played as a false nine during his Stamford Bridge days while he is more than capable of playing in a withdrawn role.

In fact, Erik ten Hag had signed him with that express purpose in mind, even though his tactics in the 23/24 season was chaotic to say the least.

The report explains how the ex-Sporting CP boss could now go on to play the England international as a backup in one of the attacking midfield positions or as the No.8 in select situations.

“Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim wants to keep Mason Mount despite the prospect of Bryan Mbeumo moving to Old Trafford, sources have told TEAMtalk.

“Sources close to Man Utd have intimated to TEAMtalk that Amorim is a ‘huge fan’ of the 26-year-old England international and believes that Mount can bring a unique dimension to his squad.

“Despite recent rumours of a potential exit, sources state that Mount himself is eager to continue working under Amorim, with whom he shares a strong professional bond. The Portuguese tactician sees Mount’s work rate, technical ability, and versatility as ideal for his Man Utd squad.

Amorim could change the position of Mason Mount

“Sources indicate that even with Man United’s recent signing of Matheus Cunha and their ongoing pursuit of Brentford winger Bryan Mbeumo, Amorim still sees a role for Mount, potentially as a dynamic No. 8 or attacking midfielder.”

Firstly, Mason Mount must improve his fitness levels, and generally be more available when needed. His gametime is bound to increase if he stays fit.

In his two seasons at Old Trafford, the 26-year-old has missed a combined 60 games, something that Amorim cannot work with next season.

For now, it seems Mount will play a backup role in two positions, and could start in certain games should he remain fit. This might be his last chance to impress in red, or he might soon find himself searching for a new home once again.
