If the Seattle Seahawks are still looking for a veteran cornerback, a prominent name has just become a free agent.
The Green Bay Packers have released starter Jaire Alexander after seven seasons with the team. Alexander was an AP All-Pro Second-Team selection in 2020 and 2022, as well as a two-time Pro Bowler.
Acme Packing Company’s Tex Western has some more details on his contract situation, which played a role in his departure:
Alexander’s contract, which ran through 2026, was set to pay him $17.5 million in cash this season and carry a salary cap hit of $24.6 million. By releasing him after June 1st, the Packers will free up over $17 million in cap space for this season, carrying about $7.5 million in dead money in 2025. The team will then absorb $9.5 million in dead money in 2026, which is the remainder of his signing bonus money that is amortized onto the 2026 and 2027 cap years.
There’s also a bit more to Alexander’s unceremonious departure. He’s only played in 14 games total over the past two seasons, almost entirely because of injury and partly because he was suspended one game over that ridiculous overtime coin toss situation against the Carolina Panthers. Alexander’s most recent injury required arthroscopic knee injury and landed him on season-ending IR.
The Seahawks do have a connection to Alexander dating back to the 2018 NFL Draft. Seattle traded down from No. 18 to No. 27. Green Bay would select Alexander in the trade up, while Seattle selected Rashaad Penny.
Having not drafted a corner this year, it’s expected that the Seahawks will look for veteran cornerback help before training camp. Seattle has brought in Rasul Douglas and former Seahawks draft pick Shaquill Griffin for visits but neither one has come away with a contract. I doubt the Seahawks would be in play for Alexander when they’re more likely looking for depth signings than an immediate starter, but I won’t rule anything out. It’s not like Josh Jobe’s contract makes him an unquestioned starter.
