Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has won the club’s May Player of the Month award.

United ended the season on a disappointing note, suffering a 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur in the Europa League final at San Mames.

The loss condemned United to the worst ever season in their modern history, finishing in 15th place in the Premier League table, having suffered 18 defeats and amassing just 42 points.

But, there was one bright spot – Fernandes.

The Portuguese playmaker was the standout performer in United’s miserable campaign, notching an impressive 19 goals and 20 assists across all competitions.

His exploits earned him United’s Player of the Year and Players’ Player of the Year prizes.

Fernandes kickstarted May by scoring two goals in the club’s 3-0 first-leg victory over Athletic Club in the semi-final tie of the Europa League. He followed that up with an assist for Casemiro’s headed finish in the 4-1 return leg victory at Old Trafford.

The 30-year-old was also instrumental in United’s final game of the Premier League season, a 2-0 victory over Unai Emery’s Aston Villa. He produced a fine assist for Amad’s goal and unselfishly gave Christian Eriksen a penalty kick in what was the Dane’s final appearance for the Red Devils.

Fernandes has now won four Player of the Month awards in succession. No player has ever achieved such a feat since United started logging the victors in 2016/17.

On Tuesday, news broke that Fernandes had rejected Al-Hilal’s mega offer in favour of staying at United.

Al-Hilal offered him £200m in wages, but he turned them down. Fernandes himself confirmed this, emphasising that he wants to continue playing at the highest level.

He also noted that United and Ruben Amorim made it clear to him that they had no desire to sanction his sale.
