New York Yankees starting pitcher Max Fried threw another gem on Saturday, adding another exhibit to his growing case for the 2025 American League Cy Young Award.
With outfielder Aaron Judge locked in as the AL MVP favorite, the Yankees could become the first team since the 2013 Detroit Tigers to have distinct Cy Young and MVP winners in the same season.
Per MLB.com’s Paul Casella, Miguel Cabrera (AL MVP) and Max Scherzer (AL Cy Young) were the last teammates to receive the honors.
Dodgers starting pitcher Clayton Kershaw is the most recent player to receive both awards, accomplishing the feat in 2014.
In Saturday’s 13-1 win over the dreadful Colorado Rockies (9-43), Fried allowed one earned run and six hits while striking out seven batters in 7.1 innings, throwing an efficient 83 pitches (57 strikes).
Fried improved to 7-0 and maintained his 1.29 earned run average, the lowest in MLB among 81 starters with at least 10 starts entering Saturday. (h/t FanGraphs)
