Tigres UANL fans were buzzing with excitement over reports linking Argentina’s World Cup winner Ángel Correa to an imminent move to Liga MX. However, the potential signing was cast into doubt after Atletico Madrid released an unexpected statement regarding the forward’s status.
Rumors of Correa’s transfer intensified last week when Relevo journalist Matteo Moretto reported that Tigres were just one step away from finalizing the deal. Tigres president Mauricio Culebro even publicly acknowledged the club’s interest in the striker, who was reportedly set to join for a fee of around $6 million.
Fuel was added to the speculation on Sunday, when Correa scored in Atlético’s 4–1 win over Real Betis. After the match, the Argentine forward posted an emotional farewell message on Instagram, seemingly confirming his departure:

Correa’s move to Tigres appeared all but official. Argentine journalist Gastón Edul even reported that the player had already agreed to the transfer as a personal decision based on lifestyle and family factors. However, Atletico Madrid abruptly addressed the situation on their official website, leaving fans stunned:
“In light of the doubts that arose at the end of yesterday’s match against Real Betis at the Riyadh Air Metropolitano, the club would like to clarify that Angel Correa is currently under contract with Atlético de Madrid until June 30, 2026. No club has contacted our institution to initiate negotiations for a possible transfer of our forward, nor has his representative presented us with any offer for the Argentine international.”
The statement, released on Monday, firmly denied the existence of any ongoing discussions—not only with Tigres but with any club worldwide.
