Manchester United’s season has been full of highs and lows, but their current Premier League standing is the most alarming sign of all. Sitting 16th in the table—the lowest position in the club’s modern history—the Red Devils suffered yet another blow over the weekend. Following a lackluster 2–0 home defeat to West Ham United, head coach Ruben Amorim addressed his uncertain future at the club.

Just days after securing a spot in the Europa League final against Athletic Bilbao, United returned to Old Trafford for a league match with little at stake. Both sides are far from the European qualification zone, making the fixture largely irrelevant in terms of standings. But for Amorim, the game revealed deeper concerns.

The Hammers stunned the home crowd with goals from Jarrod Bowen and Tomas Soucek, but the result itself wasn’t the biggest issue. What concerned fans—and Amorim—was the team’s flat performance. Manchester United registered just one clear scoring opportunity over 90 minutes. When asked about the players’ lack of urgency in league play, Amorim didn’t hold back.

“It’s a different competition, but in the Europa League, we don’t win quite well, but we have a little bit of that urgency. We cannot lose the games, we have to win them. In the game against Athletic Bilbao we were so focused, and in the Premier League, sometimes we are not that focused, and we don’t have that feeling that we need to win to go to the next stage.

“It’s something that’s mentally in our team. It’s hard to explain. I have that feeling, that lack of urgency in everything we do. It’s a big concern,” the Portuguese coach added, highlighting a disturbing pattern in his squad’s mentality.

Amorim addresses his future as Manchester United coach

After a successful spell at Sporting Lisbon, Ruben Amorim was brought in to lead Manchester United’s long-awaited rebuild. But nearly a year into the job, he’s facing a growing cultural problem within the squad. When asked if he plans to offload players who don’t align with his mindset, Amorim redirected the focus—offering a more personal and reflective response.

“I don’t want to talk about players. I’m talking about myself. I’m talking about the culture in the club and the culture in the team. We need to be really strong in the summer and be brave. We will not have a next season like this if we start like this. If the feeling is still here we should give space to different persons.”

Amorim took over at United in November and is under contract through June 2027. That gives him two full summer transfer windows to reshape the roster. However, the coach has now openly acknowledged that if he fails to instill the right mentality across the squad, he may be the one to step aside.
