Furious Amorim lays into players and calls out the ‘lack of urgency’ after West Ham defeat

Sweden secure top spot in Group C by thrashing Germany

Ruben Amorim said he and his Manchester United players should leave if they cannot inject some urgency into their play.

United slumped to yet another defeat with struggling West Ham winning 2-0 at Old Trafford this afternoon thanks to goals from Tomas Soucek and Jarrod Bowen.

The hosts were lifeless bar a late onslaught that failed to conjure up a goal with Hammers goalkeeper Alphonse Areola in outstanding form.

United’s flops struggle again

Amorim made several changes to the side that thrashed Athletic Bilbao in midweek, powering United into the Europa League final against Tottenham, with the fringe players failing to impress.

He told Sky Sports: “If you look at the goals that we suffer we can avoid these goals. The lack of energy, of urgency. That is the most dangerous thing in this club. You can feel it at the beginning of the game. Between our box and the opponent’s box there is a lack of urgency. That is something we have to change in this club.

“I am responsible for that. It is frustrating because we are so near the goals. We have such a lack of urgency to protect our goal. This is week by week. We don’t play so well in the Europa League but we have a different sense of urgency.

“It’s something we need to work on. It’s inside the pitch and outside the pitch. If we are not able to do [that] we have to go away and give the space to different people. All of us.”

Our problems won’t be solved by beating Spurs – Amorim

Amorim said a win over Spurs in Bilbao on May 21 would paper over the cracks with United sitting in 16th place in the Premier League following their 17th defeat of a wretched campaign.

He added: ”We are going to face a team from the Premier League so we are going to struggle. Of course we are going to be more focused, and that is a concern because we have to be focused every game.

“For me it doesn’t matter if we win the Europa League because the problems are much bigger than that.”

Defender Leny Yoro limped off against the Hammers but Amorim hinted it was not an issue that would prevent him from playing against Tottenham.

“He had that problem at the beginning of the season,” said the Portuguese. “We hope it’s not too serious. I don’t want to say too much but maybe it’s not a big deal.”

Potter delighted with overdue win

West Ham bos Graham Potter hailed his players’ desire after they ended a run of eight games without a win.

He told the BBC’s Match of the Day: “Sometimes we talk about performances a lot as coaches, but results are nice. We’ve been in the middle of a really tough run. Today was great in that regard. The players executed things really well. Good intelligence. They showed all the things they needed to to win a football match. A great day for everyone involved with West Ham.

“You can talk tactics but it’s about desire and application and sticking together. The player’s attitude and commitment to what we’re trying to do has been first class.

“We have the capacity. We just have to keep working.”
